Summary

Winner of the 2016 Hugo Award for Best Novel
Book 1 in the double Hugo-Award-winning trilogy
A New York Times Notable Book
Shortlisted for the World Fantasy, Nebula, Kitschies, Audie and Locus Awards
The inaugural Wired.com book club pick

This is the way the world ends...for the last time.

It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world, spewing ash that blots out the sun.

It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter.

It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.

This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

The Broken Earth trilogy is complete - beginning with The Fifth Season, continuing in The Obelisk Gate (Winner of the 2017 Hugo Award for Best Novel) and concluding with The Stone Sky (Shortlisted for the 2018 Hugo Award for Best Novel).

Excellent if a little surprising

Excellent book and well read. Took me a little time to get into it but would highly recommend it.

Haphazard first novel.

The book clearly has better reputation than what it deserves. The storytelling is all over the place, submitting into amateurish pitfalls much too often.

The narrator is top class. She tries to keep momentum going, but sometimes struggles as there just isn't much to work with.

Excellent!

I first enjoyed this, the first book in a trilogy, as a kindle book. Like the stone which features centrally throughout, it's the tale of a hard life with bright veins and sparkles, and the end is not an end. So if you enjoy this, immediately download the next book! There is joy, and there is grief, and there is weird. N K Jemisin's world building is always credible, if very other. No spoilers about the story - listen, and let the earth move!

Particular thanks to Robin Miles for the excellence of her narration. She reads clearly, and with exactly the right amount of expression. No rushing, no misplaced pauses, no unnecessary stresses. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the trilogy.

Great story

I enjoyed this book, felt a little disjointed at first but it all becomes easier to follow as the story and characters develop. I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

The fifth season

Why does anyone care about my opinion?
I really liked this story, but you might not, or you might.

Rovk Solid Start

Not self contained so be prepared to read the sequels. Excellent world building and magic system, partial use of 2nd person was tidy and the performance was delightful.

Fantastic world building overshadows plot

The author takes world building to the next level! A stunning, intelligent, and speculative future setting doesn't fail to enthrall. But I found it difficult to follow the interweaving storylines as there just wasn't enough driving each plot, and I kept having to check back to ground myself in the POV characters as they came up. My mind definitely wandered, but I think that would have been less so had I read it rather than listened to the audio book.

Great story and performance

I enjoyed every bit of it except for a truly awful effort at a Scottish accent... the sort of Scottish accent accurate only to Americans' ears. But that's a quibble. Its a highly original story, well presented.

Truly 5* fantasy fiction

Really enjoyed this book throughout. Clever storytelling, well imagined world and characters. Quite powerfully emotional at times too, which was helped by the decent narration. Very much looking forward to the next in the series, which if the Hugo award is anything to go by, should be even better!
