About this listen

This brand-new unabridged audio book of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power – the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.

Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Featured article: Aragorn - a Lord of the Rings character guide

From his time as the ranger Strider to his ascension to King of Gondor, this guide has everything you need to know about the hero Aragorn. Perhaps one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Aragorn is known by many names: Strider, Elessar, Estel, and finally Aragorn II, heir to the throne of Gondor and Arnor. From a shadowy tracker who mysteriously comes to Frodo's aid to an essential member of the Fellowship of the Ring to the long-awaited king who restores harmony and peace to Middle-earth, Aragorn plays many important roles in the fantasy epic. And he has quite an interesting history.

Andy Serkis nails it. Strong individual character performances and a somber yet expressive narrator voice. The story is the story, if you want to know about The Lord of the Rings you can find that elsewhere!
One point of personal taste - he sings the songs. I would have preferred then spoken or chanted; but that’s what the 30 second skip button is for!

Masterful performance

A breathtaking performance by Serkis. It would be disingenuous to describe his work here as a 'reading' - it's more of a one man audio drama. The energy and passion he puts into this production brings Middle Earth to life in the listener's imagination and does more for the scope and grandeur of Tolkien's work than any of the filmed adaptations to date. Superb.

Oscar-worthy performance

You would think there were many voice actors in this book as Andy is able to distinguish each and every character. A joy to read, he really brings this story to life and I couldn’t stop listening.

Andy Serkis is a master storyteller

Serkis is fantastic. I'm so glad this has finally a modern reading, and I'll be going straight into the 2 Towers.

Andy Serkis is incredible - love the gentle homage to the actors’ voices from the films - a Scottish Pippin, a northern Boromir- the hours literally fire by.

Fantastic

Serkis is near perfect! Emotions and personalities come to life in Serkis' work, extra credit for the songs!

Andy Serkis is the perfect person to read this book. He brings the characters to life with his vocal and acting skills

Outstanding

This was a true pleasure to listen to, the only thing that I might put down as negative is the quite long songs that come sometimes, not that the reader can’t sing but more that it gets a bit boring to listen to in the long run. But that’s just me looking for a dislike. Andy Serkis has a fantastic voice and makes the characters alive, thank you for reading this book for us!

A true pleasure!
