About this listen

Revenge. Betrayal. Murder.

In the gritty underbelly of 1980s Glasgow, Scotland, one cop stands tall - even with a fear of heights.

Faced with a daunting task, DI Luc Kidston must focus on finding a samurai sword-wielding vigilante while untangling the case of one of his protégés, who's accused of a chilling crime.

To solve both problems Kidston will have to take some unorthodox steps, including enlisting the help of a forensic hypnotist and challenging his own colleagues.

As the stakes rise, will he be able to push beyond his limits?

The Fear of Falling is perfect for fans of Neil Lancaster and Ian Rankin.

Born and raised in Glasgow, John Harkin's novels draw on his experience as a former police commander and hostage negotiator. His debut novel, The Fear of Falling, was featured in Bloody Scotland - an annual crime fiction festival.

I liked the story and characters, although felt more use could have been made of the Gorbals Samurai, who was all too easily identified. The big issue for me was the narration - I found it flat and monotonous, regardless of what was happening, and difficult at times to disgorge characters. Really affected my enjoyment of the book

Enjoyable but let down by narration
