A real Turkey
- By AR Hume on 08-07-15
Summary
The Princess Cecile, the corvette in which they carved their reputations in letters of fire, has been sold as a private yacht, but she still has her guns, her missiles, and her veteran crew. Daniel and Adele will need all of those things as they face winged dragons, an Alliance auxiliary cruiser, jealous lovers, and a mysterious oracle that really does foresee the future.
That won't be enough, though, when they penetrate a secret Alliance base and find a hostile fleet ready for a war that will sweep Cinnabar out of a strategically crucial arm of the galaxy. Preventing that will involve skill, courage, and more luck than a sane man could even pray for; and it will require a space battle on a scale that a tiny corvette like the Princess Cecile has no business being involved in.
But she'll be in the middle of it anyway, because Daniel, Adele, and their Cinnabar crew would never turn their backs on a fight!

Space Opera at its best
As with the first Lt. Leary contribution by David Drake, the story is Space Opera at its best and very well written. On the down side, the boring, inflection free narration style of Victor Bevine will put you to sleep unless you really, really pay attention to what he's saying when he's not reading dialog.
What possesses producers and directors to allow this deadpan reading style in an adventure story is beyond me.. Certainly, they should know better by now!
Loved the story. Can't stomach much more of the narrator.

Starfaring Swashbuckling at a Whole New Level
Great story this time around, with several sub-plots that feed seamlessly into the over-all thrust of the novel. A very enjoyable listen all the way around. Victor Bevine's reading is still a shy lackadaisical for the cut and thrust scenes of personal and space combat, but less distracting, I think, probably because I'm getting used to it.
