About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

You're terminally ill.

Who do you kill?

Set in a near-future America, an America that has borne two terms of a Trump presidency and is now in the first term of Donald’s daughter as president, Frank Brill, a retired small-town newspaper editor, lives in a world where the populist policies Trump is currently so keen to pursue have been a reality for some years and are getting even more extreme – an erosion of abortion rights, less and less gun control, xenophobic immigration policies.

Frank, a good man, has just been given a terminal diagnosis. Rather than compile a bucket list of all the things he’s ever wanted to do in his life, he instead has at the ready his ‘fuck-it list’. Because Frank has had to endure more than his fair share of personal misfortune. And he has the names of those who are to blame for all of the tragedies that have befallen him.

But eventually, as he becomes more accustomed to dishing out cold revenge and the stakes get higher and higher, and with a rogue county sheriff on his tail, there only remains one name left at the bottom of his fuck-it list.

Critic reviews

"Gripping, terrifying and hilarious – John Niven is our Hunter S. Thompson." (Adam Kay, author of This Is Going to Hurt)

This novel has an audacious plot and is part political satire and part thriller. I loved it and raced through it. The book is not so much a whodunnit but more of a 'when's he going to do it and to whom and how?'. It is a shockingly believable portrait of an America that might just happen if the wrong people stay in control long enough and the right people get angry enough to do something about it. Crisply paced and brilliantly read, this is an absolute must for anyone who loves intelligent satire laced with warmth, wit, sadness and truly just deserts for those that need them.

Thank goodness it's only a story. With the newer developments, thankfully this can stay as fiction.

A USA what if story, if COVID19 didn't happen.

Very funny, though bound to offend some. if you've read/listened to John Niven before you'll know what to expect.

The narration is first class - the rendering of certain characters is eerily true to life.

Good book, well narrated

Wonderful. A well crafted, entertaining read, the more enjoyable for knowing Trump didn't win another term.
It's a strange thing though, that of the dozen or so books I've read published this year, not one has mentioned Covid 19. This, set later in the 2020s, is another one. It's a bit like setting a book between 1939 and 1945 and ignoring the second is world war.

Great entertainment
