London, England, 1840: Evangeline Stokes loses her position as a governess when she finds herself pregnant out of wedlock. After being accused of assault and of theft, she is committed to Newgate Prison, then to a prison ship bound for Australia. On board, she strikes up a friendship with Hazel, sentenced to seven years for stealing a silver spoon.

Hobart Town, Australia, 1840: Mathinna is the orphaned daughter of the chief of the Lowreenne tribe. Adopted by the new governor of Tasmania and brought to Hobart to live with the family, she is treated more like a curiosity than a child. These three women - Evangeline, Hazel and Mathinna - will all become part of the story of the creation of a new society in the land beyond the seas....

I learned a lot about the fate of convicts sent to Australia/ Tasmania and life once there.

Exciting and informative

Contrary to other people's reviews about the narrator, I found her to be easy to listen to, and with the Australian accent, it felt right as the book is set in Australia.
The story itself isn't so much of a page-turner or a need to get to the end, but more of a journey and the setting was just suitable for a rainy Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed it in its entirety.

Great Book for a Sunday afternoon

This page Turner managed to combine a Familia historical story with a vivid narrative. The writer has covered most aspects of transportation to Australia with clarity and imagination. The narrator was excellent interpreted some of the RS drama with a light touch. Not too sure about her Scottish accent!

Loved this detailed story about the desperate lives of women transported from Britain . Many had not committed the crimes they were sentenced for. Also the story of a native girl taken in as a specimen to be studied by the governor’s wife. All the women fight to survive, to be seen and respected. The main protagonist changes over halfway in and I did find that jarring. But I recommend this book .
