Summary

Wil Calder is an astronaut when his experimental spacecraft breaks down near Neptune. What a crappy way to go, don't you think? Alone in the deep dark of space.

Except that's not how the story ends, it's how it begins. He's rescued by alien smugglers, his pod sold for scrap.

Then he's given a choice; join the crew or step out the airlock without his spacesuit. Which would you choose?

Now, years later Wil is a lonely space smuggler himself looking for a crew because he's bored out of his skull.

Because it turns out, space is lonely and boring, so Wil could use some friends.

Before Wil can even enjoy having a crew to call his own, they're pushed into the center of a plot to start an intergalactic war. They had no part in starting it, and aren't remotely qualified to stop it, but here they are.

What would you do? Find a quiet bar on a backwater planet!

That's not an option for Wil and the crew of the Ghost though. Between epic space battles and a daring heist, the crew uncovers a dark secret. A secret that they can't let stay in a dark.

Did we mention that the fate of the entire galaxy rests on his shoulders? No pressure, Wil!

Space Rogue

It is fun to listen with different individuals coming together as friends and a team to accomplish something good and meaningful. The characters were well written, plot consistent, action constant, and a sense of humor present in the whole story.

A new space hero!!

Good book introducing Will Calder and his new crew. Good characters make this story and it's a strong start to a new series.

Well narrated, that keeps the story moving at a nice pace.

Fun Book 1

Was a fun listen. I've listened to all of KC Johnston's books thus far and just wish he had more out, makes it hard to play follow the narrator to get a new book. Space rogues was a fun book, but it's short. hope the next ones in the series get longer. overall was action packed and fast paced. interested to see how the characters progress together in the next books.

Next one soon!

Only complaint is the length, and that book 2 isn't out yet. We shall see what the future holds for the crew of The Ghost, hopefully sooner rather than later. Not sure this is a must listen, but it's solid like the others I've listed to from this narrator. book 2 please.

Peacekeepers

This book was a fun listen. The narrator was fantastic. My main issue was the alternating chapters. It seemed to either be two different "Wil's" way seperated from each other, or a "Past" Wil, and a "Future" Wil. However, I had a hard time following it all, and was mainly invested in the timeline with the robot. The fight against the "Peacekeepers"--totally the same style as PeaceKeepers from Farscape. It was a lot of fun and I'd be curious to see how this series turns out if it becomes ongoing.

A roaring adventure on the high seas! Er... in space!

An excellent example of a true adventure book translated into a space-based sic-if. Aliens, smugglers, and intelligent robots, this book has it all. It starts off a little slow but quickly builds in intensity and excitement. The narrator does an excellent job of voicing each character appropriately and consistently. Overall, a fun read.

A fun, easy listen!

The Epic Adventures of Wil Calder, Space Smuggler (Space Rogues, Book 1) by John Wilker and narrated by KC Johnston was a fun, easy listen! Would recommend if you are into space operas.

What’s it about? The summary explains it well so details here will be minimal. Some other things to expect: peacekeepers, officers, different planets, goons, smuggling jobs, night markets, aliens, and a robot. It’s fast-paced, lots of action, and humorous at times.

The narrator, KC Johnston, did a fantastic job at bringing the characters to life. I would recommend listening to his books. He is one of two narrators I’m following to see where their narrating careers go.

Overall it was good and I recommend if you’re looking for a space opera.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: some swearing (S-word, F-word), drinking (the brew of space but it does get you “wasted”), smuggling, death, MC considers suicide at one point.

Great Book

The story line has every element to make a great series. they say there are no new story lines, but Ii can't remember a lost astronaut being rescued by an alien salvage ship before. However, John Wilker's imagination made it easy to believe in the possibilities. Setting the stage for the series to Grow.

The performance was great by KC Johnston. The voices he gave to each character gave a visual effect to each one.

A good mix of positivity and adventure

I enjoyed the nature of the story quite a bit. While there's certainly some action it always feels like the protagonist is walking around with a big grin on his face. It was a breath of fresh air in a genre usually choked with melancholy. Worth a listen to be sure and I plan to pick up the next as soon as its available.
