Summary

A fatal blend of revenge and desire.

After leaving her fiancé at the altar and quitting her job as a Miami cop, Beau Hayley stumbles through life, feeling only resentment. Injustice. Loss. Her mom’s death was called an accident. She’s not convinced. Grieving, she becomes numb to everything except the constant, biting pain of heartbreak and hate. She can see no light. Until she meets James Kelly, a man who seems as damaged as she is, inside and out. And yet despite his twisted, cold façade, he stimulates feelings. Pleasure. He is a respite from her own flaws. A complete mystery.

And impossible to resist.

James Kelly has only one objective. Find the men who murdered his family and kill them all very slowly. But the web of crime and deceit leads him to Beau Hayley, the daughter of the notorious FBI agent who pursued him relentlessly until her death. Beau is not what James expected, and past the darkness that shrouds her, he finds a glimmer of light. Light is addictive. An escape. Beau might be the key to James’ mercy mission, but with dire consequences. So he has to decide - leave her breathing and risk exposing himself, or kill her and continue his mission, still unknown.

Two tortured souls playing one deadly game. But who will survive?

Wow!!

I finished this book in a day and a half. It is the second book in the “Unlawful Men” series by Jodi Ellen Malpas. I knew it would be amazing as all of her books are stunning! Emma Wilder and John Hartley were perfect narrating this book. They really made this book amazing simple because of their narration. I loved their voices.

This book is about Beau and James and how they meet and after a lot of drama, danger and angst actually fall in love. My god they have such a rough road to find their happiness. James is an English alpha but Beau is also an independent and strong woman trying to recover from losing her mother. There is a lot of violence and murder in this book but it’s written so well. The twists in this book are also brilliant.

I don’t want to spoil this book so I won’t go into to much detail but I will say that they do find their happiness after so much heart break. I really enjoyed this book so much. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone.

Wow!!! The Enigma is a must!!

I love JEM's Alpha's, you never let us down, but the ladies are remarkable. I had a real lol moment when Beau says to James.... "he's not fucking real" I could really picture her doing it. The Brit was epic, The Enigma was immense, what ride will The Ressurrection be!!!!

A 5 ⭐️ WEIGHTY STORY & I LOVED IT

I was mentally rubbing my hands together in gleeful anticipation at the thought of what twisted tale Jodi has created for two very damaged characters.. but whoa, the suspenseful story that followed was much much more exciting than I ever expected. As James and Beau’s relationship flares to life with their toxic chemistry, their sexual tension and their heat results in some pretty hot bdsm mind and body fking. But there are a lot of secrets in the intricately woven web that surrounds them.. there are a lot of emotional damage and hurdles to break through.. and there are enemies close by who are hiding in plain sight. And it’ll take those 17+ dual POV hours for these deeply flawed character’s jagged pieces to fit together, for shocking truths to be revealed, for tension-filled twists and tragic turns to bring dangerous drama and for an alliance to be made with a ghost in the semi-cliffy TBC plot line.

Worth a credit? Oh yes definitely if you like dark anti-heroes, a mentally unstable but strong heroine, h-h-heat and a twisty torturous plot. Addictive storytelling, jam packed with unpredictable angst, drama, heat, chills and thrills and impressive character growth over the many hours brings emotional pain, all-consuming passion, possessive murderous jealousy and an unbreakable love partnership. A partnership forged from the flames of the hell they went through connecting their flawed and damaged souls. Emma and John’s narration brought James and Beau’s well-written thrilling hot journey to life, they made the dreadful hurt and the delicious spicy and sweet and they delivered a mind-blowing five star audiobook. IMO, you can listen to this story without first listening to book 1 (The Brit).. however, it does continue the Unlawful Men underworld story where the first book left off and book 3 will continue, include, and directly involve the preloved characters from the first book. (Plus.. you’d be missing a great listen).

5 chapters in 🤦‍♀️

I'm five chapters in and it's already difficult to continue, unfortunately I can't leave books unfinished... But for the beginning of the story it feels like you're playing catch up with things you were never told... The female character just drones on randomly... I don't see the motive or the building of any character story so far... Feels very unthought out.. I loved the Brit and I don't find this book anything like it.

Love Jodi’s Books

I’m not crazy about Beau’s cadence to her voice. If that’s even the right word. But I got used to it. The story is intriguing. Her characters always drag me in deep .

A contender to the Brit, The Engima

I loved The Brit and now we have The Enigma…both equally psycho in their ways but I really like the chemistry between James and Beau. There are twists and turns in the plot and both of them have gone through some rough and horrible times - plotting revenge and they find each other to feel the calmness, peace they give to each other. Of course, the sex scenes are hot as ever and the narrators nailed it. I loved how Emma did James’s voice - so very talented ! Now on to Book 3 which is the continuation of Book 2

If you want a book where you can skip sections of

the story - too much repeating of the same feeling, description of self, etc. Just too much overall. I've read other Malpas books, this one goes to the bottom of the pile.
Over all, the 1st book in this series was good so I was thinking that trend would continue, my error. Perhaps Sean East added to the over all appeal, still I wasn't skipping parts to get to the end.
Narration -John Harley's voice was perfect for the assassin role.

Emma Wife's breathy reading was not a good fit. Admittedly, I fast forwarded after awhile when it came to her di etcBeau's problems, Beau's stupid decisions. She supposedly was in the top 5% of FBI academy, nominees so given all her mistakes, even though she was a top cop, she messed up more than a kindergartener on the first day of school.

Performance Ratiing for John Hartley - 4 1/2 stars. for Emma Wilder -2 1/2 stars. His voice alone is what kept me interested in the book.

OVER ALL, good performed by Mr. Hartley, story was too much spoken and not enough movement in it to ever be reading againn.

Loved the Enigma

This is the second book in this twisted by oh so good series. The Enigma is a brutal killer, but he only kills very bad people. He becomes taken with the daughter of a dead FBI agent, and has made it his mission to protect her from those who want to harm her like they did her mother. Only problem is, she doesn't know. And when she finds out who he is, it's explosive. Soon a web of lies is uncovered and so many people she once thought she could trust are now after her. Its full of action, passion, mystery and danger. Cant wait for the last book where the brit and enigma join forces.
