Summary

When a palace maid is attacked, Josie and the captain of the guards investigate together. Since one of the suspects is a foreign diplomat and magic expert, they use the opportunity to learn more about sorcery. But it soon becomes clear that he is using them to get to the truth about the palace and the servants' origins.

With unrest in the village, and servants growing impatient for answers, an undercurrent of danger pervades the air. But the most dangerous man of all may prove to be the king himself, because every clue points to him knowing more than he lets on.

As tensions both in and out of the glittering Glancian court rise, the heat between the captain and Josie is a distraction. But is it a welcome one?

Great series

I have really enjoyed this series on audio as the narrator has a lovely voice. I've also read other works by this author and still follow those series. There's always a mystery to be solved per book but an overall mystery theme to the series which I really enjoy.

continuity is great

I've loved all these books by CJ Archer, and the narrator has become a big part of the story. Her reading of the books is very good, even if she does sound like she's full of cold in this book. excellent from book 1 to the end of the series when their memory's are returned.

Love the whole series

Such a great series and as you read, you can imagine life in old England. It's a mix of history and fiction and I loved it!
