Summary

When a murder echoing a 15-year-old cold case rocks the Southern town of Savannah, crime reporter Harper McClain risks everything to find the identity of this calculated killer in Christi Daugherty's new audiobook, The Echo Killing.

A city of antebellum architecture, picturesque parks, and cobblestone streets, Savannah moves at a graceful pace. But for Harper McClain, the timeless beauty and culture that distinguishes her home’s Southern heritage vanishes during the dark and dangerous nights. She wouldn’t have it any other way. Not even finding her mother brutally murdered in their home when she was 12 has made her love Savannah any less.

Her mother’s killer was never found, and that unsolved murder left Harper with an obsession that drove her to become one of the best crime reporters in the state of Georgia. She spends her nights with the police, searching for criminals. Her latest investigation takes her to the scene of a homicide where the details are hauntingly familiar: a young girl being led from the scene by a detective, a female victim naked and stabbed multiple times in the kitchen, and no traces of any evidence pointing toward a suspect.

Harper has seen all of this before in her own life. The similarities between the murder of Marie Whitney and her own mother’s death lead her to believe they’re both victims of the same killer. At last, she has the chance to find the murderer who’s eluded justice for 15 years and make sure another little girl isn’t forever haunted by a senseless act of violence - even if it puts Harper in the killer’s crosshairs....

Wow! Great Book

I have never read anything by this author and frankly was a little hesitate to purchase this book. I find few authors do strong female lead characters well. Most make them overly emotional or hard as steel; caricatures of real women. The female lead had a difficult childhood, but has made a place for herself as an adult. When faced with issues from her past she reacts as I believe most women would, with doubts and concerns, but also strenght. While I figured out the ending about 3/4's into the story, I enjoyed it to completion. Overall, I liked the book and will definitely purchase another by this author.

Can’t wait for this book series to continue!

This book had it all, great narration, wonderful story that kept you hanging to the very end and kept me hooked the entire read/listen. I highly recommend this book, this is what a mystery/thriller should be like. Her main character has just the right amount of spunk and vulnerability. Yay, a new series to listen to!

One of the weaker mysteries I've read

The narrator was a bit too flat for me which made I think impacted the story some for me. The story was also predictable and the ending left far too many loose ends. With an ending like that it makes the rest of the book feel like a waste of time.

Average mystery

I will agree with another reviewer, this is an average/weak mystery novel. However, I will also agree with others in saying, it was a good debut. I purchased this as part of a sale, so I would only recommend listening this if you too can purchase on sale, as I would not use a credit, or pay full price for this book.

There isn't too much to say about the story itself. The characters were developed enough to like them, and differentiate their individual personalities, but there was not a ton of substance - making you feel close to any of them.

I am not sure why so many diss on the narrator. I believe she did a fine job. I am not sure she is southern herself, but I think she portrayed the accent well. I've listened to much worse narrators, and Sophie Amoss does not fall within the terrible category like some of these other reviews may have it seem. I'd rate her performance 7/10.

Overall, 13 hrs on this book was a little too long. Perhaps the editor wasn't all that great. I am not sure I will continue the series.

Such potential

Great story plot but it was boring. The author lost me right off the bat with how she tried to tie the 2 murders together based on only her man character thinking the crime scenes looked similar!? I wish the author would have put in more intrigue and made it not so long. The ending was a buzz kill.

Excellent debut novel

Christi Daugherty is a name I will be very familiar with after reading this book and so will everyone else. She leaves the reader anticipating the next book in this series. Really cannot wait to see what’s next from her.

Excellent story line, with great narration!

Great book. I loved the idea behind this story, and the narration was top notch. The main character is fighting against all odds to try to bring to light a crime that she is the only one who wants solved. I found the mystery part of this story a little predictable, but I really didn't care, as the writing was just that good. Very well done.
