Summary

Whatever has happened to you, it is not who you are.

The world may know Chris Duffin as the "mad scientist of strength", but you wouldn't have ever guessed that if you saw the scrawny kid skinning rattlesnakes and chasing dragonflies in the early '80s. The story of his unconventional life will take you from gripping tales of murder, trauma, heartbreak, and survival deep in the Pacific Northwest wilderness all the way to an idealization of the self-made man - still flawed, but never broken.

In The Eagle and the Dragon, you'll follow one man's journey into the darkness of his own heart and witness the transformation of alcoholism, pain, and defeat into vision, character, and victory. Through Chris's powerful self-realization, you'll see how the human spirit can be either shackled by circumstance or freed from it.

Are you ready to walk through the fire and make your vision a reality?  This audiobook will show you how.

highly motivational

What a story. This guy showed resilience and resourcefulness from such a young age and achieved some awe-inspiring feats. If you want to feel inspired by a genuinely legitimate human being, get the book. If you want to understand the origins of kabuki strength, get the book. If you want a relatively quick list/read but still want a damn good read, get the book. Just get the book!

lifes tough...what of it

@mad_scientist_duffin thank you for this book. A part of and witness to many things that would leave most people a shell of themselves for the duration of their lives, but learning to thrive... to say the least. It doesn't offer itself as 'self help' but it challenges you to ask who, what and why you are who you are. I think it offers ultimate perspective to anyone unsure of their position in this world from someone who's asked that question to themselves repeatedly to near ultimate intent. It will help those who feel that they are bound by their past some clarity in relinquishing that notion and suggests quite concisely if you fine tune aspects of your life and focus you can achieve so much more than you ever thought you were capable of.

Perspective and accountability

I knew bits of the authors story from listening to various podcasts he had been on. I am also very much aware of kabuki strength. This book however is a powerful shot of perspective with the added dose of lessons learned. Inspiring.

A story of endurance, hardships and an unbreakable fortitude

Highly recommend to those who are in a place of procrastination, and uncertainty in their lives.

I found this book gave an incredible perspective based on the authors life and created a profound sense of motivation in myself to move out of procrastination and to a place of doing.

A little disappointed

I have known about the author for a while now and followed his podcast too. The book is alright and no doubt Chris has had an interesting and varied life. If you read a lot of personal development books you will have already heard a lot if not everything of the examples that Chris speaks about. Resilience, planning, cutting out negative people from your life are the main messages which you can find in most books of this genre. There is no real tools to take away from this book, just Chris's life examples that somehow you have to link to your own.

Three read lights, and a bomb out

I have known about Chris for years and decided to buy the audio book as I had heard Chris on Mark Smelly Bells' podcast telling his story, my advice to you would be stop reading this review now and watch the podcast. Chris chatting naturally on any podcast is a vast improvement over robotic Chris reading this book, no passion, no emotions, nothing more than a poor text to speech engine. Chris is one of the greatest mad scientists of Powerlifting, he is not the only one, Loiue Simmons, Dave Tate, Donnie Thomson, Mark Bell are all mad scientists and all are Powerlifting legends. At times Chris as an adult seems to compare growing up with no material possessions with not having a loving family. Chris was extremely fortunate to not only have a loving mother but a loving father and step-father. Chris is driven and has a won’t stop, won’t quit mentality, it’s not that failure is not an option it just never seems to be the outcome. When Chris splits from his first wife and started talking about would he be single for the rest of his life my inner voice screamed “NO ,OF COURSE NOT, ARE YOU MAD?”, Chris tells the story about a gym goer who had a bad back issue, he watched some Kabuki Strength videos (many of which I have watched and benefited from) and tripled his squat record, what a sales pitch.
