My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away, but we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other, and our dogs. Then the thief came. He told stories of the deserted towns and cities beyond our horizons. I liked him - until I woke to find he had stolen my dog. So I chased him out into the ruins of the world.

Zombie Apocalyptic Romance
- By Missgotty on 25-05-21
Summary
A post-apocalyptic zombie story.
Though it is about an illness the message remains true, and that is when there seems to be no light hold on to hope. It is about never giving up when it appears there is nothing left to fight for. It is about not taking anything for granted from the simplicity of tasks, to the little noises, all the way up to the people we cherish; and that sometimes the strangers we meet along the way, even if we don't see it, are the ones that give us that strength.
Holly and Tony were a young couple in love. They thought they had all the time in the world but they were wrong.... As the illness spread, and the population was dying, chaos sprang forcing Holly, Tony, and her family to flee their homes. A plan set and necessities previously stocked for this anticipated moment they took to the road. One night as the deranged charged their camp, they were forced to scatter, separating Holly from everyone she knew and loved. In her search for her family and Tony, she stumbles upon a small community.
By the light of a flickering candle, from a typewriter she found in her travels, Holly tells us about the illness, her new life, and her search for the ones she lost. She shares her new philosophies on life, all that we take for granted each and every day, and human vulnerability as she reminisces the past, and her dreams of one day being reunited with the love of her life and her family.

Not at all what I expected
I recently read The Stand (Complete & Uncut Edition) by Stephen King, and it was an absolute chore for me to get through. Despite how seemingly universally loved that story is (and how much I tend to enjoy King's other work), I really didn't care for it at all.
I mention The Stand simply because I was reminded of it as I read the first chapter or two of The Dying Butterfly, and it caused me great concern about what I was diving into. Thankfully, my Stand-induced PTSD quickly vanished as I continued reading, and I started drawing a stronger comparison to a different book that I enjoyed much more - Run by Blake Crouch.
All this being said, I think it would be unfair to say that The Dying Butterfly is overly reminiscent of any other story in its genre, because Fletcher sets an entirely different tone in her book. Whereas The Walking Dead, Run, The Stand, and other stories in this category seem to repeatedly, relentlessly rob their characters of hope, The Dying Butterfly is infused with a sense of optimism in the face of seemingly-impossible circumstances.
I loved where this book left off, and it has me hungry for more… I imagine The Dying Butterfly is the first in a series, which I am eager to continue reading.
It may also be worth mentioning that this book was likely written for an adult audience, but (unless I'm forgetting something) it is mostly safe for young adult readers as well. The sex & violence is basically "PG-13," and while there is some language (7 f-bombs, 13 s-words, etc. across 37 chapters), it does not over-indulge. As a parent of younger children who enjoys alternating between ebooks and audiobooks, I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to worry about my kids overhearing anything too "spicy" if they entered the room unexpectedly.

Hope Should Never Die!
OMG, warning! What a story! This will make you laugh at some of the things that goes on and definitely bring tears to your eyes the next moment. Instead of hiding away and waiting for the world to get back to what use to be normal everyone that was healthy fought to survive and make a new life with what they had and could find. The creativity and hard work put into making a village above ground and below was amazing. This story made me constantly think even if just a story, if they could do it, mean survive and keep going, why can't we?
Reading this story brought back memories of going through the beginning of Covid. Brad the neighbor and holly's dad bought all the important things you could think of, batteries, water, gas, food and medical supplies for example in bulk. So much so that all Holly and her mom could do was roll their eyes thinking the men were going overboard. Then that time came when the stores couldn't keep the shelves stocked or the trucks couldn't even make it to the stores safely, the lights went out and life as you knew it was over and those preparations came in handy.
Like Holly I also wondered both in the story and in real life what was the point of the questionnaires? People had no clue what to do when some people answered yes to some of the questions. I have to agree that the the health people had to feel like they were doing something, but what that something was, no one knows. Where do you go, how do you react, what do you say to a person that answers yes?
There are several times during the story that Holly definitely shows her selfishness. She gets an dea in her head and it just has to be done no matter what, act first and thinks later. Made me want to reach through the book and shake her! lol.
This is another story narrated by Heidi Bindhammer and wow she does a great job! The emotion she puts behind each character and situation is terrific. I mentioned at the beginning that this story would make you want to cry and it's due to Heidi that those situations will become real to you.
Hope should never die!

Great read/audio book
This book parallels to some of society’s issues of today. Disease is spread from China and envelopes the entire world. Mass hysteria, uncontrolled violence, etc ensue.
Holly is a strong willed young lady that doesn’t let adversity define who she is. She learns to adapt and overcome the challenges that she faces.
A fantastic tale that will leave you feeling on edge as you race through it.

Creative and realistic feeling story!
This isn't normally my go to genre to listen to. I listened to the sample and liked the narrator’s voice along with being really intrigued by the cover and blurb for the story. It felt like the story started off a bit slow for me but once I got Into it, it was definitely worth it. I loved how realistic the story was, kinda scary like I could see everything playing out just as it was wrote. Great job DLFletcher, I hope you continue to write more! Definitely worth a listen!

THIS could actually happen...
My first book by D.L. Fletcher and wow! I have listened to a lot of 'apocalyptic' type of books and hands down, this is one of the best. Holly, her boyfriend, Tony, parents and a friend of the family all are faced with a virus that changes the world. (they don't turn in to zombies!) D.L. Fletcher takes us through the trials and tribulations of what life looks like when the world, as we know it, collapses. This book flows so well that I had a really hard time putting it down, and, when I did, I was anxious to pick it back up again. I got caught up in their lives, yelling at Holly to stop being stupid, laughed when Mr. Clay teased her, was upset when Maxine...well...I'll stop there. But, let me just say...READ IT!
I listened to the audiobook version of this and this is also my first with Heidi Bindhammer. SHE is also fantastic. She IS Holly for all accounts and purposes. Holly is telling the story and Heidi made me believe it.
I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to listen to book 2!
