About this listen

Krispin Adair has been alone for years. After his family was killed by his brother in the ultimate betrayal, Krispin accepted his lonely fate. Until a chance encounter brought him face to face with his fated mate...

Ben Morgan, on the trail of a rogue gargoyle, finds himself in an ambush. Attacked and left for dead, he knows there’s no hope for him. But when he wakes, he finds himself face to face with his Beloved and an ultimatum; if he wants to live, he must bond with the dragon king...and bear his son.

While the pair are making things work, they learn that Ben’s attack was just the start of something bigger - a war between the species. As if that wasn’t bad enough, an old shadow emerges with one wish - destroy all dragons. Can they stop the war?

The Dragon King’s Heart is the first book in The High Garden Dragon series, a fantasy series with mpreg (not omegaverse). This short novella packs a lot into it: world building, political intrigue, life/death situations, true-mates, hidden royalty, surprise pregnancy, and a whole host of characters. I was actually surprised with how short the book was after I finished considering the wild ride the plot took me on.

The romance was sweet and I love how tender the two main characters were with each other. The plot pushed forward fast and the action kept on coming. I wish the book was a bit longer and took a little more time to develop scenes and characters, but overall it was a good read and it set the stage for the next book nicely.

The audiobook was narrated by Aaron Ross, a new-to-me narrator. He did a decent job with the narration, but sometimes the voicing of the characters wasn’t as distinct as I would have liked. I listened to this audiobook in one day and it kept me entertained.

A rogue gargoyle is sent to kill a vampire, and Ben Morgan is the unfortunate one and is stabbed fatally.

Krispin Adair, a dragon shifter, is called in by Ben's pack leader, as nobody else has been able to save Ben from his stabbing. At this point, they will try anything and everything to help him.

This is a great story, full of ups and downs. Mating, Mpreg. Great reading, keeping you riveted throughout the book. Highly recommend.

Good narration from Aaron Ross, but I did speed up on Audible, which is usual for me, but clear and concise. I will be looking for the next book in the series. I absolutely love the Scottish brogue.

The audio was interesting as it took me a while to get used to the different accents for Krispin and Ben. Once I did though, I enjoyed the performance - aside from the last sex scene. That one didn't work for me. I dunno if it was the writing of it or the performance but I had to tune out.
As for the story, it was fast paced with a fated mates element. The birth was unusual as these things go but not overly described.
I'm tempted to pick up more from the series

A dragon and a vampire, a great combination for me! This book has a nice world building. A vampire enforcer in a mission ends up fatally hurt at the dragon’s clinic. Dr. Adair is no ordinary dragon. I enjoyed their mating and the suspense around their circumstances. Sometimes, I got confused on who was talking but the narration did it’s job.

This is your classic romance, add in some m-preg and honestly if you’re looking at this review this book might work for you. It was heavy in it’s info dumping throughout the whole book and had a lot of POV’s for an short story however it was like an old school PNR romance so easy to just read through.

It helped that I was reading this via audio. I thought he did a good job with the context even if he wasn’t great at female voices and didn’t really make it clear when they were narrating and talking, but that could very well be a book itself, I don’t know.

It was short and quiet and I intriguing enough that I might pick up the next one
