Summary

Arriving on the windswept Ile de Ré, Tabby Dewhurst is unable to even afford a room for the night. Overhearing a villager repeating the access code to her front door, she lets herself into the house, and so she enters the strange, hidden world of Emmie, whose sudden offer of friendship is at odds with her obsession with privacy.

Tabby begins to form suspicions about Emmie, suspicions that lead her to a scandal with shattering consequences.

Horrible performance

I listen to a LOT of audio books and shouldn’t have broken my own rule: always to listen to a sample. I was seduced by the Ile de Ré setting as I know it well- and I’d read another book by the author. The story is an undemanding domestic thriller lite and perfectly good but the reading of it is truly dreadful and comes so far between the story and the listener that it really does ruin it.
Apart from the ridiculous different voices for each character, which are ludicrous and intrusive - just bloody READ it!- there are infuriating mispronunciations of simple French words- femme, gare, pied and debuting are just a few examples - which could and SHOULD have been easily checked. Shame on the publisher too for such laziness. Ultimately too irritating to give the book even a fighting chance.

well written but frustrating

I had the same problem with this book that I seem to have with all Louise Candlish books which results in a bit if a love hate relationship... I really like her writing and her observations but I find her plotting frustrating. foreshadowing is a great tool but Candlish uses this, and dual narratives, so much that most of the time we've long worked out what's about to happen and are waiting for one of the characters to catch up. I was also infuriated by a double standard that went completely unchallenged or commented on in the book.

Disappointing ending

Loved the story and was riveted all the way through. Couldn't wait to find out what happened but was totally let down at the end. Don't know if it's just me but I didn't get it. What happened to eve and is it the real Emily Marr who lives with Arthur? What a let down.
In the positive I love Louise candlish books.

Fabulous and Totally Engrossing

I loved this book it was such an unusual story and had me hooked from the first minute. I really enjoyed the narration and found the character voices just right. I love Louise Candlish's books the dialogue is so realistic and the characters so well drawn. It does not matter to me that there are no great twists and turns these books are just a great listen. I am now working my way through all her titles but have been disappointed with her earlier works she is certainly an author who has really developed and always manages to create interesting and unusual plots. I would well recommend this as a good solid holiday read.

What!?!?!

This ending was so ridiculous I rewound several times thinking there was an error.
Having persevered through what can only be described as a dirge the most exciting part came with the revelation to Tabby. Then the whole thing wound up suddenly with no real conclusion.

There is no ending?

I have read in other reviews that there is an epilogue to this story, but it’s not on Audible?
If there isn’t one, its like the author couldn’t be bothered to finish the book! Disappointing to say the least!

Epilogue not there

There is an epilogue to this book. The author wrote it. I have seen it in a copy belonging to a friend. Why was it not narrated feel cheated

Where is the ending?

What a disappointing read. I thought I had misheard 'the end' and had to go back and re-listen. Some very dubious narration as well.
