The Deadly Pact
Summary
The exciting sequel to A Faded Star continues the stories of the humans of Lashmere.
Shifting alliances throw the diplomatic situation into chaos. In this second of a planned five-novel series, you will find out what's happened to the survivors of the expeditionary force, who's manipulating the Alliance, and, finally, what the true motivations of the frightening crabs are. Can Admiral Stokes and his naval commanders prevail against a rapidly shifting tapestry of potential foes? Humanity is in for its greatest challenge yet in The Deadly Pact.

Mediocre
The story has some interesting concepts but the prose is very amateurish. Much of the writing is drab, and the wording lazy. You'll get sentences like "She looked around the room, looking around for a computer terminal".

Too short...
The book was too short, and ended too abruptly. I hope the next book is out soon, and ends more conclusively.

I enjoyed it more than book 1
I found the human's serendipitous finding of the make-all ship a little too convenient in book 1 and there are a couple of similar incidents of lucky "finds" in book 2 but, really, the overall story, which I enjoyed in book 1, actually got much better. The author expanded on his cast of characters by including more in-depth knowledge about the Alliance and the crabs, as well as introducing another third independent human-like species. He also created separate interesting story arcs to go along with these expansions.
Eagerly awaiting book 3.

Nice story. The telling part needs work.
The writing is pretty clumsy and the sequence of events shows increasing problems.... which leads to more dissatisfaction with book 1 also. Why would a population stuck on a single planet for 5k years only have 2 ethnic groups? Why would there be any military space force at all after a civil war, presumably fought on the surface of a single planet?

Here's hoping Freeport and Andrews write quickly!
Wonderful story, ready for books 3, 4 and 5. The amount of detail helps build a highly complete mental picture. The insight to each main character develops a familiarity that provides continuity as the story progresses.

Loving the Science Fiction!
The performance is wonderful. MacLeod Andrews is very talented. I am enjoying the SCI-fi so much. I feel the excitement as if I'm reading the old time SCI-fi stories. Can't wait for the next one!
