THE STORY

There, he finds himself caught up in a war of deception, and soon faces a terrible choice: leave Calyx and its people to drown in the crimson tides of war, or defy the Queen of Blood.

'The Dead Kingdom', by John French, was a fantastic return to the life of our outcast haunted hero, Cado Ezechiar. Following on from 'The Hollow King', we find Cado lured into a war of webbed deceit by his mistress, Neferata, in the cunning kingdom of Calyx. He is accompanied by his own get, a new character named Sissendra, and Aurelias, one of Neferata's necromantic mortal thralls. The plot unfolds wondrously, and French's prose is forever clean-cut, simple, and enchanting. This was a gloomy, gothic, and extremely well-written novel. I hope we soon receive a third instalment as the Hollow King finally finds his way towards Lethis, City of Ravens, to confront the Tzeentchian Burning Hand!
