About this listen

AN AMAZON BEST BOOK OF THE MONTH PICK FOR LITERATURE AND FICTION

'The Day Tripper is absolutely astonishing, from first page to last. Warm, clever, hopeful, and superbly written. James Goodhand is a brilliant storyteller at the top of his game. I adored it.' - Stuart Turton, bestselling author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

It's 1995, and Alex Dean has it all: a place at Cambridge University next year, the love of an amazing woman named Holly and all the time in the world ahead of him. That is until a brutal encounter with a ghost from his past sees him beaten, battered and almost drowning in the Thames.

He wakes the next day to find he's in a messy, derelict room he's never seen before, in grimy clothes he doesn't recognise. A glimpse in the mirror tells him he's older-much older-his features ravaged by time and poor decisions. It's 2010-fifteen years since the fight.

After finally managing to sleep, Alex wakes the following morning to find it's now 2019, another nine years later. But the next day, it's 1999. Never knowing which day is coming, he begins to piece together what happens in his life after that fateful night.

But what exactly is going on? Why does his life look nothing like he thought it would? What about Cambridge, and Holly? In this page-turning adventure, Alex must navigate his way through the years to learn that good decisions can have untold impact. And that might be all he needs to save the people he loves and, equally importantly, himself.©2024 James Goodhand (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

This really interesting premise is under-delivered by very repetitive episodes where the main character seems to do little more than whine about why nothing changes. I know the feeling! The narrator sounds like Alan Davies, a studied faux-childlike intonation that I think is meant to be endearing but ends up being annoying. Incongruent Americanisms crop up in relation to driving (getting gas, "pop the trunk", etc) which jar against this British boy-next-door patter. There are some touching moments, not least with the young Jaz, Alex's mum and the introspective internal dialogue during the final encounter with the main character's arch nemesis. Certainly enough to keep me listening to the end.

Could have been so much better

Clever concept well executed, takes a little while to get the hang of it but becomes a real page turner.

Clever and well written

I’ve just finished The Day Tripper by James Goodhand, and I don’t say this lightly—this may be the best book I’ve ever read or listened to. Absolutely superb. It’s so beautifully written, the characterisation is flawless, and the emotional journey is astonishing. I don’t mind admitting that I was in tears by the end.

I listen to audiobooks every day while walking in the Surrey Hills, and as this one reached its conclusion, I found myself with tears streaming down my face more than once. It’s a time travel story, yes, but that description is entirely inadequate. At its heart, it’s a love story—a story of wrong choices, mistakes, and redemption.

I nearly didn’t pick this book. It popped up as a recommendation while I was searching for something else, and I thought I’d give it a try. I’m so glad I did. Now that it’s over, I feel almost bereft.

If you’re on the fence, just get it. You won’t regret it.

A Masterpiece – Probably the Best Book I’ve Listened To on Audible

This book could have been over complicated but it’s segues back and forward in time worked. The story was fascinating and the characters were really likeable or believably flawed. Loved it ....

Compelling!
