Summary

Hailed by literary critics as the inventor of modern-day horror, H. P. Lovecraft is the cultivating force behind such modern writers as Robert Bloch, Wes Craven and Stephen King. The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, Volume One is a collection of his best-known tales narrated for the first time by Wayne June and includes both "The Dunwich Horror" (published in the summer of 1926) and "The Call of Cthulhu" (published in the summer of 1928).

Classic stories, well told.

The stories of Lovecraft are as brilliant as ever, with Mr. June's voice adding a great sense of horror and gravitas to the words.

A dark view of our Reality <br />

It is made reality by an excellent author.

I read 'The Call of Cuthulu," as a teenager, it, I suppose is the one story, by Lovecraft, that has always dragged me back to his works.

Utterly unsettling

I wouldn't call these horror on the modern expectations. But they remain unearthly enough to push goosebumps through even the sternnist of skin.

Excellent Series for those who love Lovecraft...

This release and the whole series is new, well produced, and provides an excellent medium for those who enjoy H.P. Lovecreaft. There are a total of six albums in the series, although Audible has five on sale.

If you are a follower of Lovecraft you know how difficult it is to get solid, well recorded audio books into the library. This is the path. Their principal reader, Wayne June is quite balanced: with clarity and no strong sense of being a goul, as some other readers are.

The recordings are priced about right for non-Audible-credits payers. I doubt that one 3-hour download is worth a full credit (which can be worth a full 20 hour download for other recordings). My suggestion: Since there are an even number of books available, have a two-for one sale.

Excelent !!

My first ever audiobook , I came here because of Wayne's work in Darkest Dungeon. I am supremely satisfied with the experience and Wayne is fantastic to listen to.

Can't recommend this enough.

Narrator is amazing

I've loved Lovecraft for a long time, but I feel like I'm experiencing it for the first time hearing it read by Wayne June. He has an incredible grasp of how to do character voices. He brings the lushness of Lovecraft's prose to life. Passages that I must admit I've found boring when read on the page become genuinely creepy when read aloud by June's cultured, insinuating rasp. I'll be listening to this one over and over.

He was made for this books

I don't believe I need to say anything about the book or the Author, there is nothing I could tell that has not been told before. The Narrator tho... Wayne June's deep and sonorous narration is nearly hypnotic; once you start listening you just forget to stop. I am not ashamed to say that I first heard of him from a videogame where he also acts as a narrator. The game is called Darkest Dungeon and as you may tell from the name, it's also centered around horror and a very 'lovecraftian' kind too.

Matter of Fact Lovecraft

Wayne June reads two of Lovecraft's best-executed stories in the tone of a staid man of common sense, say a business manager or a pedantic scholar, who has been brought unwillingly to believe in strange and terrible things. His approach underlines Lovecraft's strengths while covering his faults. An excellent afternoon's entertainment.

Creepy and Compeling

What made the experience of listening to The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, Volume One the most enjoyable?

Two Words. One Name. Wayne June. This guy could read the phone book and make it scary.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, Volume One?

The Climax of The Dunwhich Horror really stands out, the whole story builds and builds and the dread grows and grows. It's amazing.

What about Wayne June’s performance did you like?

Everything. Just re-read the top, that's it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not originally, but once Mr. June's voice started in I just could not turn it off.

Any additional comments?

For any fans of H.P. Lovecraft this entire series is a must have.

Entrancing

I am new to the H.P. Lovecraft Mythos. Firstly being introduced through Tabletop Role Playing Games, the dark ideals and nihilistic struggles drew my interest. Wayne Junes readings of the contained stories are just so entrancing. His voice ensnares the senses and rumble perfectly with the utter deepness of futility inherent in the pages. Loved it. Would definitely recommend.

Wayne June is amazing, but the value is poor.

Audiobooks are expensive. Hopefully that is not news to you. So while Wayne June has the darkest, sexiest, smokiest, whiskeyist voice, and Lovecraft's stories are classics, this series of them is priced poorly, in credits or actual money. There are collections which are better value propositions, with good narration, if not Wayne June narration, so unless you really love Wayne June a lot, you might want to go for those.

Good but lacking quality

Overall a very good audiobook but the audio quality could be better, I know its from 2004 but I was very surprised at the quality.
