Summary

A brutal home invasion shocks Brattleboro's small Asian community, but no one is talking. Undeterred, Joe Gunther digs deeper and discovers a cross-border smuggling route carrying drugs, contraband, and illegal aliens into and out of Canada. Operating below the radar for years, competition between underworld rivals is bringing it into the light with deadly consequences.

International jurisdiction is a complicated matter, and in the pursuit of justice, Gunther will have to collaborate with the FBI, the Border Patrol, and the Mounties.

not as engaging as others in the series

I love these characters Jo and Gail, the townsfolk and selectmen... this book is minutely researched as they all are but this story line although deeply important to society just did not catch my attention. Nonetheless I listened to the end and there were some beautiful scenes and observations of people.

A good, fast-paced story

A very detailed and realistic story. However, for me, I feel that this is the type of book that needs to be read rather than listened to on Audible. Don't get me wrong, the narration was excellent, but the multitude of characters, many of them Asian, were very difficult to remember when not seeing them in print. This was exacerbated by the fact that many of them were known by different names, and I was very confused as to who was who. Added to that was the flitting between the USA and Canada, and, being British and lacking familiarity with the various places and organisations, I became a little lost at times. Maybe if I had made a who's who list as I went along, it may have helped, but I only realised I needed to do that part way through the book.

Confusing, over-detailed, humourless

Struggled to finish with endless confusing character introductions, too much detail about the areas and the jurisdictions, politics, agency interactions and neighbourhoods. Tedious

fast paced

While fast paced, strong characters and descriptive mis en scéne throughout, I found the book overly laborious in parts. Overall 4*.

Brilliant

Another well paced story . Following the career of Joe Gunther. The narrator is one of the best I’ve listened to and keeps me listening to the next book as the last one finishes . Reading inbox order .

Good story

these stories always have a touch of realism about them, this one probably the most so far in the series, great stuff.

Not his best

I found the story to widespread and the characters not as 3D as his previous works. Still won’t halt my progress through the library

Another great story

I’m listening to the Joe Gunther books in order and I love their detail and complexity and clever writing. This one is excellent and the detail with the great plot is why I love it. I’m so glad I found them!

Great performance but…

I do like the Archer Mayor Jo Gunther series however this one just wasn’t anywhere near his best. It started well but went on much too long. I had to rewind the last third so many times as I was having trouble keeping up with all the characters and the plot wasn’t going anywhere. So unfortunately I won’t be tempted to read this one again.

Joe Gunther on an Off Day

I’ve loved all his books so far but this one I found difficult to follow. There were no characters I could get involved with. And too difficult to remember which Asian character wax which. Luckily I didn’t have to buy as it was included. Struggled through five hours and then face up.
