Fun Modern Horror Story with Excellent Narration
- By MR J LAMBERT on 16-01-21
Summary
Christy Barnett is sleeping when her aging German shepherd Molly growls into the darkness outside her bedroom. She wakes to a dim glow provided by her Kindle's screen, thankful that she had fallen asleep while reading again. The power has gone out, the world outside her window is eerily dark and silent. And Molly is weary of something that waits in the hallway, hiding in the shadows.
A dark cloud has fallen over the city of Aberdeen, MD. The population disappears in an instant. For the handful of survivors, those lucky enough to have a light source not connected to the power grid, it's more than terrifying. They're left alone, walking through a nightmare, and that is a fate that could be worse than death itself. The darkness is alive and it is the reason we fear the night.

reminded me of the movie the mist
Any additional comments?
imagine you're sitting on the couch in your living room, texting your friend, as the power goes out. your first reaction is to moan and groan about the loss of signal. but when you lift your head to see why no else one is saying anything, you notice everybody around you is gone. you don't realize that the only reason you're still here is because the light emanating from your cell phone protected you from being snatched away by the darkness when you look around and call out to see where everybody went, you catch something out of the corner of your eye. you see them standing on the edge of the darkness. when you ask them what's going on, all they say is, "turn out the light."
this is a spooky story about what lurks in the dark. there's a small, likeable cast of characters that you come to know pretty intimately through their fear of what's happening. there are some creepy moments that'll raise the hair on the back of your neck.

If only this book had a better narrator
I am a big fan of Jason Brant. He's a great guy and a great writer. The Dark has to be my favorite book by him. I'd previously read it in ebook format, but I wanted to feel the experience in audiobook format. Unfortunately, the narrator just didn't cut it for me. The sound of his voice wasn't bad, it was just... flat and lacking, in my opinion. So I didn't enjoy this audiobook as much as I had hoped to.

Nothing unique.
Nothing new to see here. It's just a re-hash of Steven McDonald's Event Horizon, just with minimal action and it takes place on the ground. Save your credit.

Not life changing but good.
It was a good story some of the characters were a little annoying and I would like to have known more about the monsters maybe even gotten a description of them not wearing human skin. it was very lovecraftian in the nothing you do matters in the grand scheme of things way and really like that. would have loved for this book to be a series or tied to a larger universe.

Just Alright. Not bad
Would you be willing to try another book from Jason Brant? Why or why not?
Sure. He has potential to be one of the Greats some day. This book kinda missed the mark though
Could you see The Dark being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Sure, it's pretty much the movie "The Mist" I believe.
Any additional comments?
This book seemed too short. So much potential to be a great read. I wish there were more detail, and the book had more action.

Are you afraid of the dark?????
Are you afraid of the dark?????
While I’m not my sister was so we had to sleep with the lights on. She had this idea that if we turned off the light The Dark would take her …..This story by Jason Brant matches my sister’s belief.
The Dark tells the stories of the three main characters and how they survive the sudden darkness that befalls their town. Christy with her dog Molly, Walter, and two teens move around the town looking for their loved ones. They encounter others that are struggling to make sense out of the sudden and overwhelming darkness
I don’t usually read horror novels, but I really liked this one because of its original idea; the idea of the Darkness being the main theme of this tale of horror rather than being only the setting. Personifying the dark was great, this was untried territory that peaked my interest from the beginning.
The characters were well developed. They are natural, logical, very likable and understandable. In addition the psychological aspect of the characters was really amazing as it gave the characters another dimension of realness.
The events of the story were told by moving from a character’s point of view to another, (I like that in a story, it tends to get boring for me when there is an only one character POV), there was no problem of predictability of the events, the story line and events within the novel were unique. This is another thing I loved about this book.
The plot was fast paced, logical, and I enjoyed the ending. I hope that Brant does more with these characters and creates a series.
Robert Martinez did an amazing job with this one. Martinez skillfully transferred the feelings of the characters to you, making them real. Further he changed the volume of his voice to match the scenes perfectly, and I liked that he sometimes used a creepy voice in certain places as it added an additional level of creepiness.
I recommend this book!
