Summary
Shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library
Here is fresh and engaging crime fiction with an appealing heroine – the first in a series of mysteries featuring forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway.
When she’s not digging up bones or other ancient objects, Ruth Galloway lectures at the University of North Norfolk. She lives happily alone in a remote, wild place called Saltmarsh overlooking the North Sea under Norfolk’s vast skies.
When a child’s bones are found in the marshes near an ancient site that Ruth worked on 10 years earlier, she is asked to date them. The bones turn out to be 2,000 years old, and DCI Harry Nelson, who called on Ruth for help, is disappointed. He’d hoped they would be the bones of a child called Lucy who’s been missing for 10 years. He’s been getting letters about her ever since – bizarre notes with references to ritual and sacrifice and quoting the Bible and Shakespeare.
Then a second girl goes missing, and Nelson receives another letter similar to the ones about Lucy. Soon it becomes clear that Ruth is in grave danger from a killer who knows that her expert knowledge is being used to help the police with their enquiries.

Charmingly addictive...
I have read Elly' s Ruth Galloway stories out of order so know the characters which in some ways is lovely. I felt like I could concentrate on the story rather than wondering how the characters woukd develop and I found this quite enjoyable.
I find Elly's plots not too complicated, the right mix of well rounded characters, a hint of tongue-in-cheek and very easy to listen to. Thankfully, the narrator was pleasant to listen to. Some detract from the story and are somewhat annoying.
I've already downloaded the next book in the series and will listen to them in order, even the ones I've already heard.
Overall, a great listen whilst relaxing over a cuppa.

A great listen!
This is a good forensic thriller that had me wanting to drive somewhere so I could listen to the next chapter.
Well written and researched as far as I could tell - definitely getting The Janus Stone!

Really eerily good
I was initially wary of this, as it starts rather abruptly, but within a couple of paragraphs, I became interested, then intrigued. I initially thought that I’d known who the culprit was - then I changed my mind! Then I’d change it again and then again!
This is a a fascinating read. One that I hadn’t had for a little while. I had not discovered this author before this month, but now I have, there’s no stopping me...

Pootles along
Got rather bored actually and felt Ruth jumped to conclusions! I wouldn't waste my money on this.

A forever favourite
I love all of the Ruth Galloway novels and revisit them from time to time - either in print or on Audible. The latter is a wonderful medium for driving and going on long solo walks. Ruth and Nelson are such well drawn characters, that I feel I know them.

Couldn’t finish this
I was excited to find a new crime writer. Reviews seemed good so I thought I’d start a series at the beginning. The first big turn off was the narrator. Accents didn’t work at all and the inflection was in the wrong places. The story was cliched and once we got to a brutal killing a cat I’d had enough. Waste of monthly subscription and first time I’ve felt prompted to write. Bad review

A good listen
I enjoyed listening to this story and am looking forward to Book 2! Narrators voice was easily to listen to and often that can make or break an audiobook for me plus the author gave the listener a few suspects so the culprit wasn’t immediately obvious, which can often be the case.

Good story, likeable characters
I enjoyed this very much and will look forward to the others in the series. I did predict a few things in the plot- but didn't make it any the less enjoyable.
