Summary
Sixteen-year-old Billy and his brother Boyd are fascinated by an elusive wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. Billy captures the animal - but rather than kill it, sets out impulsively for the mountains of Mexico to return it to where it came from.
Billy returns, finding himself and his world have irrevocably changed. His loss of innocence has come at a price, and once again the border beckons with its desolate beauty and cruel promise.

Bad Things Happen To Good People
Billy Parham is decent, courteous and loyal. My wife doesn't like McCarthy. She says that nothing ever happens in his books. Plenty happens to Billy in this one and none of it is good.
This book is really three stories in one. The first is truly magnificent. For me, anyway, the simple ending is the most affecting of any of the McCarthy novels I have listened to.
You certainly do not have to have to have listened to the first book to enjoy this one. It stands apart from the first.

It Couldn't Be Better
This is by far the best read audiobook I've ever heard. Richard Poe is perfect from start to finish. I think I'd find it hard to listen to anyone else read Cormac McCarthy now.

Epic tale
Cormac McCarthy writes a good story. The second installment of this trilogy is as evocative of the era as the first.
I read the book some years ago but this in no way detracted from the listening, indeed I will happily listen again in years to come. An advantage of reading the book was the ability to flick through pages when the occasional character: Mexican peasant or gypsy present their rambling philosophy of life. We're it not of these interludes I would certainly award the book five stars *****
Time to revisit volume three . . . . just not for a little while.

Good but a slow start and too much Spanish
I enjoyed this but it takes a while to get into its stride and there is too much untranslated Spanish. A real shame as it breaks the flow of the story for those that haven’t a clue. Still worth the time though and I would recommend with said caveats

.
I was born in America, but events during Vietnam took my drafted father to north Yorks hire...........england. I may be put too much stall in displacement......... But this writing has made me understand something of the human condition and how that vast land has defined us as a species .my favorite writer my favorite book

Bleak but brilliant
A heartbreaking story from start to finish. Beautiful prose and narration. I preferred All the Pretty Horses as it was less bleak. Also less use of Spanish which at times made following The Crossing a little hard.

Beautiful and heart wrenching
Beautifully told.
I’m working my way through the border trilogy. I feel like All the Pretty Horses was a warm up for this.
This book contains many stories within the main story as this is a story of the road & all the tales that come along it. This story is beautiful and heart wrenching.
I’m looking forward to the next one.

I gave up
with six hours left , I just gave up couldn't care less about the main character, his brother and whatever will befall them. Will read the third book , but I won't waste my time if it's as pointless as this

poetic and philosophical.
Compelling, and poetic in it's imagery with lots of philosophical observations about life and human nature. Always interesting and thought provoking. There are lots of long passages written in Spanish which can be somewhat confusing, unless you understand Spanish of course. The narrator was excellent.

Beautifully written but it didn’t work for me
Loved the first book and the prose here is wonderfully evocative. But if you don’t understand Spanish then you miss almost all the dialogue leaving this feeling impersonal and a meandering plot over 12h doesn’t help.
Some will love this but it wasn’t a patch on the first book
