Story
One woman's struggle against the darkness of Hong Kong's drug dens. Until it was pulled down, the Walled City was Hong Kong's most foreboding territory. It was a lawless place, dominated by the Triads, and which the police hesitated to enter. Strangers were unwelcome. Drug smuggling and heroin addiction flourished, as did prostitution and pornography, extortion and fear. When Jackie Pullinger set sail from England in 1966 she had no idea that God was calling her to the Walled City.

The dramatic autobiography of one of China's dedicated, courageous, and intensely persecuted house church leaders. Gang-fighters! Drug addicts. Teenage runaways and prostitutes! The toughest and most hopeless kids that New York's ghettos had to offer. Then a young preacher from the Pennsylvania hills arrived on their turf and began preaching a message of renewal, miracles, and God's love. This is one of the century's great true stories. God is Awesome!
This is an amazing story of David Wilkerson and how he was lead by God to work with the young people of New York City who were caught up in Street Gangs, Prostitution and Drugs. Amazingly it relates to instances that happened 40 years ago but (sadly) could easily relate to life in the 21st Century.
With God and the help of the love, care and spiritual support of ordinary people these youngsters have had their lives turned around - this book is inspiring and uplifting. The organisation that was founded to help these young people, Teen Challenge, is still operating today all around the world.
Sadly David Wilkerson died in a car accident in April of this year but his vision still lives on!

A Wonderful Story.
Scintillating, captivating, engaging. A fine literary account, portraying the journey of faith of one man, who opened his life to the leading of the Spirit of God.
We walk with the naive and inexperienced young pastor, David Wilkerson, called by God to the dark, violent streets of 1960's New York. There, he encounters real and demanding opposition in a city flooded with drugs, gangs, loneliness, and hopelessness.
We meet the people he encounters along the way - the relationships built - and their impact in partnership for the gospel. There are lessons to be learned, a God to be trusted, a work to be done, and lives to be transformed.
At times, the temptation to quit appears insurmountable. This is the tale of a relationship with God - trusting Him alone for the impossible. A wonderful, frank, and informative true story of God's grace in a world desperate for His love, kindness, and power.
For such dark subject-matter, the writing style has a compassionate, yet up-beat and buoyant approach. The journey twists and turns, gripping the reader with a palpable fascination. Paul Michael narrates the story with gifted ease. The pace flows well, offering a seamlessly enjoyable experience.
What God does in this apparently impossible, and seemingly unending cycle, is beyond words. Where the tale ends, the real-life story continues. This book may cause genuine tears, faith, and enthusiasm. A first-class read.

A Very Powerful Book.
I believe that every Christian needs to listen to this audio book! It is very moving and shows the true nature of evangelism. From the moment I started listening to it I didn't want to stop. I had to find out what happened next. The narrator read beautifully. I like the way he changed his voice tonality when he narrated the parts of the Latin American gang members. This is an amazing audio book which shows that there are no limits to God's Grace and His Mercy. Hallelujah!

Hope & Inspiration
This book gives hope to a dying world even more so now than in the late 1950’s, our youth are faced with drugs, porn, & world turned on its head in relation to gender identity & sexuality. Wrong is right & right is wrong, the murder of innocent children in the womb is normalised & a good thing to do, I grieve for the youth who have no guidance, no moral compass. The zeitgeist of this generation demands self first at all times. Our children are subjected to filth on television enforced & endorsed by a media that is destroying their moral fibre at a frightening pace. The only answer for this, the one & only hope Jesus Christ & the Holy Spirit, without him there is not.

The Spirit that moves
What made the experience of listening to The Cross and the Switchblade the most enjoyable?
I read this as a young man and was amazed at what the Spirit of Christ can do - my faith was strengthened. Now, listening to it 50 years later I am still amazed but know that He is all powerful - that's awesome.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
In parts I laughed and other parts I cried but throughout I was blessed.
Any additional comments?
Such faith is needed so much in the Church today - may God's spirit revive His Church and bring souls to Him.

I Couldn't "Put it Down"!
Would you listen to The Cross and the Switchblade again? Why?
Paul Michael did a great job narrating it. His character voices were just right; not too extreme, but enough of a change to add to the story.
What did you like best about this story?
As a believer, I found the stories of God's love and power changing lives inspiring. My guess would be that even if you don't follow Jesus, you would be touched by the compassion of the main characters and the power of love to change lives.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were three or four spots I found myself tearing up because of the scene.
Any additional comments?
I can't recommend this book enough. It was so inspiring and challenging. And a very easy listen, thanks to the writing and narration.

Informative
The down to earth way of the preacher makes him relatable. He is honest about his fears and unbelief at events. He does a great job describing all the people he meets, specifically gang members and his experiences with them.
It does get slow around the 5 hour mark when he talks about the organization that he created. It picks up again about 30-45 minutes to the end.
