Summary
Gaillac, southwest France.
An unsolved case.
Gil Petty, America's most celebrated wine critic, is found strung up in a vineyard, dressed in the ceremonial robes of the Order of the Divine Bottle and pickled in wine.
An uncracked code.
For forensic expert Enzo Macleod, the key to this unsolved murder lies in decoding Petty's mysterious reviews - which could make or break a vineyard's reputation.
An uncorked criminal.
Enzo finds that beneath the tranquil façade of French viticulture lurks a backstabbing community riddled with rivalry - and someone who is ready to stop him even if they have to kill again.

I can’t bear this crap anymore!
Basically, heaving breasts, hot breath, warm moist places ... Jesus ! I hardly care about the story that is a thin veil over a soft porn novel.

Like a good wine.
When I lie awake worrying. It is good to have something to try and detract me. This was a great story, well read and gripping.

The two Peters on top form as usual.
Always entertaining and informative, Peter May's crime fiction transcends the boundaries of its genre. Learned more about wine from this thrilling story than from a sommelier in a French chateaux.

A dip in the usual standard
I wondered why I had missed this instalment of the Enzo Macleod stories and now see it has only just been released on audio. Possibly it had been passed over some years ago because it was not thought sufficiently good - and if so that decision was correct. I am a great fan of Peter May and I have enjoyed the Enzo series but this one doesn't really cut the mustard. The wine detail is over the top, the startling effect the ponytailed Enzo seems to have on every woman he comes into contact with likewise. I shall certainly listen to any new Enzo story - but for anyone considering this particular book, don't - choose one of the later stories in the series and enjoy.

oh so disappointing
I love Peter May's books normally. I love the research he usually puts to great use to add background to usually great stories.
BUT - this book is so convoluted with such a frankly stupid denouement that I got very annoyed with it. It comes over as if he got to the end and rushed the ludicrous explanation because he was bored. Well, so was I!!!!

Good story, enjoyable thriller with a difference.
l enjoyed this audio book / story, it was quite a relaxing listen. Although the ending didn't surprise, there were some revalations that sent you in a few different direction.

Bit of a yawnfest for me
at times I wasn't sure whether I was listening to a crime novel or a wine Lovers Guide to the wines of France. it seemed like a rather thin plot was being padded out by Mr May's knowledge of wine and the wine making processes.

Brilliant
A an utterly amazing story, the tension was indeed stupendous, and the author and narrator still have that connection, can't wait for the next one👍

Not my favourite of Peter May books
I listen to a lot of Peter May books and usually can't put them down. This one was a tad disappointing - slow and slightly boring for me by comparison. Won't stop me listening to a Peter May book in the future though - still think he's a brilliant writer!
