Summary

Devoted father or merciless killer?

His secrets are buried with him.

Florence Lovelady's career was made when she convicted coffin-maker Larry Glassbrook of a series of child murders 30 years ago. Like something from our worst nightmares the victims were buried...alive.

Larry confessed to the crimes; it was an open and shut case. But now he's dead, and events from the past start to repeat themselves. Did she get it wrong all those years ago? Or is there something much darker at play?

Best of the best

I've read all of Sharon Bolton's work and eagerly pre order them. This is the best by far and I hope the 30 year gap in this story will allow her to write some more cases starring WPC Lovelady. Excellent exciting story from start to finish and kept me guessing throughout.

The narration of the main character was oddly stilted like someone reading not acting however in this story it gives the feeling of the policewoman testifying from written notes and is less obvious with the other characters.

Really can't go wrong with this whether you've read any of her previous work or not.

Disappointed - not up to usual standard

I felt the book should have ended a few chapters from the actual end. The story got sillier and sillier with massive plot holes.

What A Story!

This book has been on my ‘to-be-read’ list since reading Alive, the short prequel story. I had high hopes for The Craftsman based on how much I’d enjoyed Alive and Sharon Bolton did not disappoint with a story that’s both dark, mysterious and addictive. I would hate to spoil the story for anyone but I’ll go as far as to say the ending was excellent and unexpected. The author builds the tension throughout and brings the setting of late 1960’s Britain to life with great skill. The story switches between 1999 and 1969 and is told from the perspective of a female police officer retelling her story of making her way in a male dominated environment. She battles sexism, misogyny and suspicious locals as she fights to discover who is killing local teenagers.
Nathalie Buscombe is absolutely perfect for the story as she embodies the main character perfectly bringing her to life. She does a great job conveying the tension she experiences as well as adding depth to each of the supporting characters too. An excellent combination of author and narrator.

Chilling and believable.

Excellent reading of a well written whodunnit. The plot is complex, but not too difficult to follow, with a spooky supernatural twist.

Have I missed something

Don’t know if I missed anything or fell sleep at some time but I still do not know why they took three children and buried them alive?

What a very clever story

It took me a while to warm to the female lead, but apart from the usual thoughts of “would a trainee pc really do that”, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The narrator’s poshness was irritating to start with, but I guess that’s how the villagers would have felt as well. There’s obviously a serious amount of search gone into this book. Highly recommended.

Love this book

I have lessoned to this book twice now and and still love it.
It’s so good and you can picture the story in your mind ( well I can ) I feel like am watching from a distance what’s going on in the town.
Sharon has a great writing technique that seems too draw you into the book and you feel like your part of it.
I know at the end of the year I will be leasing again to this book.
It’s nice to hear such a strong leading lady.

Gripping!

Loved this one from start to finish. Lots of twists and turns and of course, witchcraft portrayed in a positive light. Great female characters too. Brilliant

Felt like the good old tV series

This one took me a little while to get into. Infact I listened to the first 5 chapters twice. I kind of had the Ruth Rendell mysteries vibe to this. Past and present, a few times I felt I knew, but wasn’t quite sure. The author keeps you guessing right up until the last few chapters. Flossey is a young WpC in an age where men did the policing. You can’t help but feel like she’s exactly what we needed to deal with the boys club back then. Will certainly try to seek out another book by this author
