Summary
Percival Windham is a second son and a cavalry officer acclaimed and respected by his men. He is immensely attractive and distracts himself with the women who seem to throw themselves at him at every turn. At a country house party, Percy meets beautiful, retiring Esther Himmelfarb. Esther's wealthier relations are taking shameless advantage of her dependence on them, and only Percy seems to see the striking intelligence beneath her modest demeanor. Percy sees her as the perfect companion, and she finds in him the man of her dreams.

NOT WORTH BUYING
It has four chapters, as I was getting bored, I decided to skip a few only to find I was on the last one. so it rushed into the end, totally unbelievable. Imagine my surprise, when I find out that there is another book to buy, telling their story after she has had four sons and the marriage has lost it's zest, totally rip-off. it is true that the narrator's female voice is not good, but then the material was rubbish.

What a cute story
I started reading Grace Burrowes' Windham Bride series awhile ago and stopped when I realized there was an entire series based on the family's beginnings. I'm starting from the beginning and am excited to get through it.
This book is pretty cute. I admire Esther and Percival's direct communication which seems to be missing from a lot of historical romances as it tends to be a plot point. However, in Burrowes' books, blunt and honest communication is the beginning of their relationships. It's refreshing and, in my opinion, allows the characters to demonstrate a kind of emotional intelligence often missing in some romances. I definitely think this is the kind of relationship that should be emulated (sans the gender assignation of the period) and the drama is just enough to make it interesting.
The narration is well done. I think it's difficult for some men to narrate women's voices without sounding like high-pitched drag queens, but Mr. Hampton pulls it off rather well. His interpretation of the female characters wasn't at all whiny or ditzy which allowed them to be portrayed as intended by Ms. Burrowes.

Cute short listen
Any additional comments?
Percival meets Ester at a house party. He sees her as interesting and attractive, but to everyone else she is the poor relation drudge. A ride in the rain changes everything as the two are thrown together in a private setting. A satisfying finish.

Good beginning to this series
I really liked the story. The characters were not as well developed as in other Burrowes books. Editing of this book was sketchy as well. In some ways, it was like the needle skipping on a record. In spite of the minor weaknesses, I enjoyed the book.

Cannot believe that mess was Grace Burrowes
What did you like best about The Courtship? What did you like least?
I'm shocked that the wonderful, intelligent author I know as Grace Burrowes wrote that book.It was insipid, beyond predictable and the narrator was excerable. His women's voices were all the same, terrible. Do not waste your money, especially if you are a Grace Burrowes fan.Roger Hampton, take a lesson from Simon Prebble or Steven Crossley in womens voices before you narrate again please.
