Summary

An adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness, The Count of Monte Cristo focuses on a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty.

Considered a literary classic today, The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Complete and unabridged; a 55-hour epic adventure!

Great story ruined by poor narration

I love this story but the narrator ruined this version for me. I tried several times to carry on but each time gave up because the narrator was unable to speak clearly or create characters that were credible. Also, he needs to learn how to pronounce French names properly.

There are bits missing!

Any additional comments?

Obviously this is a classic, but there are bits missing. I like to have the book as well. Sometimes I read, sometimes I listen. This is advertised as unabridged, but unfortunately, although all the chapters are there, they are not all complete.

Unabridged?

I enjoyed listening to this classic tale of adventure and revenge. Peter Batchelor worked hard to read each character distinctly in what must have been a marathon recording. Unfortunately I noticed towards the end that it skipped an important scene which is in the book by shortening chapter 112. I don't know if this is a technical fault or an oversight but it spoiled the audio book for me -I don't know if other parts were missing without my noticing.

AVOID

Great book, horrific narration. Needed to stop and pick up a different version before the narrator completely ruined it. Currently giving the Naxos version a go, an it seems quite a lot better.

Long winded, but a good storey

Quite complicated, lots of characters and in some places too long winded. However, a great storey over all. I think if I had been reading this I'd have got bored, or would have forgotten who was who, so it was good to have it as an audio book

Worth every moment

This is an amazing story that encompasses all emotions, virtues and vices. Each one is explored in a tale that consumed me from start to finish.
I know that I shall return to this again and again.

Narration captures the atmosphere….

Would you listen to The Count of Monte Cristo again? Why?

Yes - this recording kept me enthralled

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Count of Monte Cristo?

Edward Dantes escape from the prison Island

What about Peter Batchelor’s performance did you like?

The depth and professionalism of his narration as well as the credibilty of his characterisations

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Incredible adventure

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this version of the great classic by Alexander Dumas. I was completely swept away by the sense of adventure conveyed by Peter Batchelor who seemed to be wholly absorbed in this great epic. One of the marks of a good narrator is that one is almost unaware of his presence. His characters were so real and credible that it was almost like watching a movie. I highly recommend this version to anyone who is thrilled by the intrigue and creative story-telling of this prodigious author.

narrator

the most wonderful story destroyed by the narrator. his female voices were like ones of the Ugly Sisters in Drag, all pathetic, all desperate and all the same. The mens voices were indistinguishable.

Fabulous story, wonderfully written and fantastically narrated. A book that I have intended to read for a long time. Well worth it.

A MUST listen via audible!

Thankfully I listened via audiobooks otherwise the names and references to my limited knowledge of 'the classics 'would have deterred me.
A fabulous book, full of twists and plots. I laughed out loud and clasped with delight!
A really interesting thinking session afterwards, to ponder what I would have done!
