Summary

The seventh chilling mystery in the bestselling Hangman’s Daughter series.

The year is 1672. Hangman Jakob Kuisl and his family travel to Munich, the cosmopolitan heart of Bavaria, for a meeting of the prestigious Council of Twelve, the leaders of the empire’s hangmen’s guild - prestigious for dishonourable hangmen at least. But something dark is happening behind the scenes: in the past weeks, young women have begun turning up dead. At first the authorities assume they are a rash of suicides, but when Kuisl notices that each woman possesses a matching amulet, suspicions arise that someone is murdering them.

With no suspects, the superstitious townsfolk of Munich blame the hangmen’s guild, certain that they have called the devil upon the city. Joined by his daughter Magdalena, son-in-law Simon, the rest of his extended family and a slew of eccentric hangmen, Kuisl must solve the mystery of who is murdering the women. If he fails, the consequences could reverberate across the empire, affecting all the hangmen in Germany.

Great Fun

I suspect that the UK audience is low on the publishers priorities, in audience figure terms. Expecting a "warning" of a US accent and US language is rather odd and Colonel Blimpish. The book is written by a very talented German author and I expect that the audio version is aimed at a large US audience.
I find the Afrikaans accent grating, I don't expect any warnings of it, though.
We Brits live on a little island, off the mainland and we have plenty of wonderful books to listen to, if we don't like other cultures.

A rewarding story in classic style - BRIT WARNING

As with most other non-English books, this has been translated into American and is therefore read by an American in American English. As usual this is never clear in the blurb. So if as an English speaker, you are able to put up with "vest", "pants" etc all meaning something different and you can bear the 50+ occurrences of "'erbs", then you may well enjoy this book. It's packed with authentic and well researched historical interest and in classic style a series of seemingly unconnected plot strands come together for an exciting conclusion.

Notwithstanding the above, Grover Gardener - so good with Saul Bellow, is excellent.

I have enjoyed all the books in the series, this was one of the best. not crucial to read all in order, but reading first book first kind of explains it.

Best book in series

I love the adventures of the adventures of the Kuisl family. Grover Gardner is an excellent narrator and I feel like I am traveling Bavaria with them. Fans of this series will not be disappointed.

It’s a Family Thing

Great series, excellent installment, and and an engrossing read... The Kuisl’s are at it again, only this time in the big city;). The decadence and sophistication of Munich don’t stand a chance... Delightfully sneaky central mystery accompanied by diverse side adventures, awesome secondary characters, and some nicely done topical appeal... Enjoyable banter and outstanding narration brings it alive richness and style...

Cant get enough!!

I cant believe this is the last book available.... I will never get enough of The Hangman's Daughter and I frankly refuse to. I laugh with this family, openly cry with them, and my heart races when trying to decode the mystery along side them.

#9 and still going

I love Munich and am so glad that this novel was set there. For me, these books are a reminder of how rich the German/Bavarian history is in ALL aspects of life from Social interactions, the changing religious and political landscapes. I am transported to time period and am reminded that like all good historical fiction that humans without loves and desires haven’t changed in 400+ years. While this book touches deeply on the issues of premarital sex, pregnancy and abortion it’s relevancy speaks to us today. I find the “disconnect” between the rich and poor to be especially relevant today. I’m in America and the 1600s Bavaria could be 2019 USA. These issues speak to us today. We may not have a Hangman in every city but we still find ways to be punitive to those we disagree with in society. The murder mysteries at the center of this story really kept me guessing. If you’ve read through the other 8 books you know you begin suspecting everyone. I was not disappointed by how the author revealed the suspect and the motivations behind these crimes.

The Narrator is excellent and now has me hearing these characters even when I switch back and between reading and listening. Onto book ten....I recommend The Council of Twelve.

Best so far

Almost like a trilogy wrapped up in to one volume. Multiple storyline plots intertwine to create a novel that you simply can't put down. one of the best historical fiction authors treats you to an interesting array of facts about geography, science, medicine, and history amounst other things. The afterword, which should definitely be read last provides interesting facts and insights into the writing of the book. most exciting is the fact that more novels in the series will be forthcoming. it will be interesting to see how the author tops this one.
