Summary

A tough-as-nails businesswoman. An arrogant Navy SEAL. A power struggle with no end in sight.

Some people hook up at weddings. Others break a hotel room bed (and a table, and a desk, and some complimentary bathrobe belts) and discover they've been surviving on bargain basement orgasms their entire lives.

The last one? Yeah. That's all me.

She's driven and demanding.

I wasn't always a bitch. There's a dirty little trick to succeeding in business: the sweet and innocent rarely survive. I fought my way up from nothing, and I don't bend for anyone.

Until Will Halsted ties me to a headboard and makes me his, for now.

One wild, filthy night turns into another, and then we can't stop. Each time we're together is more addictive than the last, but it's nothing more than a sexy escape from reality.

Or is it?

He's never walked away from a challenge.

I wasn't always a warrior, but now it's in my bones and blood. That's what years spent in the Special Forces does to a man. My entire life is classified - where I've been, what I've seen, what I've done - and there's no mission too dangerous.

Until I realize that falling for Shannon Walsh is like trying to swim against a riptide. She's going to tear me up and toss me to the shore, and I'll love every minute of it.

Every time I'm downrange, I want her counting the hours until I'm back. Waiting for me. She's done it before; she'll do it again.

Or will she?

They're wrong for each other in every possible way.

Or are they?

Liked it

4/5 rating. This author creates individualistic, interesting characters.
I recommend this book if you can overlook some challenges.

On the positive side, the narration is great and the story is engaging.

Challenges:

The heroine in this case is so self-destructive, it's sometimes painful to listen to.

This book is overly long.

As with other books in the series, the story centres on the family architecture firm. The romance is cookie cutter, but is still engaging within the book, but frustrating as a series. In particular, the melodrama of each woman throwing a fit and dumping her lover (over some ridiculous misunderstanding or fear just to give the book some conflict to resolve) is annoying.

Loving this series

I started this series about a week ago using both KU and Audible and I'm really enjoying it. In The Cornerstone we finally gain insight into Shannon, and whats been going on with her these last few months, as well as why she is the way she is. She's been the care giver to the Walsh Clan since she was young but no ones ever been there to look out for her; and she doesn't need it any other way.. That is until she bumps into Will at the bar; will the Shannon wedding distraction plan ultimately lead to a long term fix?

Highly recommend the series for binge readers who love an overlapping story line filled with steamy moments and emotional highs and lows..

All I want to REALLY talk about is the VOICE

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this story and the spicy back and forth between Shannon and Will. This series is one of my favorites. The characters in each book are all different and INTERESTING. No cookie cutter writing here. I MUST talk about the smooth as silk voice of Christian Fox. I could listen to him all day eveeyday. His voice is EVERYTHING. The narration was great all around, and was a major part of my enjoyment of this series.

Christian Fox got it perfect!

This is my first book by this author. I realized when I was half way into chapter one that this was a series book, but I liked how it began so I decided to stick it out. Thus I am reading this one out of order but am very glad I continued reading and listening to this book.
Let’s just say you won’t be disappointed with this story when you hear Christian Fox. He has the cadence and tone perfected for the combat ready, special ops soldier in Will Halsted. Will's banter with “Miss Shannon” was hysterical at times, yet very spot on. When she pushed, he pushed back and he knew when to bargain, when to meet her sass and when to stay quiet. Because of his background he was able to see through Shannon's walls and appreciated that she was a take charge kind of woman. He thought of her as high maintenance when they first met, but it didn't take long for him to see the real Shannon Walsh. Will had arrived home to attend his sister's wedding. He had been on special ops missions for several years and wanted - needed some "bedtime" with a woman. After meeting Shannon, he decided he liked her enough to make her his weekend - have some fun and then walk away ready for another mission. But the longer they were together the more he liked her and wanted to be around her. And the way he said "Yes Ma'am" to Shannon … oh, my!
Now, Shannon - her way of showing her love for her family was motherly smothering - sometimes over the top. But, it is the character's personality and this story needed that kind of personality in order for the relationship between Will and Shannon to come full circle and to move the series forward. Not every heroine can be the perfect woman, the sympathetic listener, etc., etc. Shannon was a product of her childhood. She was emotionally short-circuited, a bit closed off, a fighter, a doer, a person who could juggle seven things at once and not drop a ball, good at reading people and intentions - a survivor. Did I always like her behavior, no! In fact, I almost fast forwarded thru some of her chapters just to get to the ones with Will “Captain America” Halsted because she got in the way of herself.
Will was very good at reading his lady and gave her room to figure things out. He had a LOT of patience.
Now as for the rest of the Walsh brothers and sister - I would have enjoyed sitting in on one of their company meetings where some talking was done and by that I mean a little bit, but there was a LOT of texting under the table. And by a lot, I mean LOTS and to the point it was hysterical. And who has meetings where there is little talking but lots of texting. Who can type that fast?
Give this story a chance and enjoy the talent of Christian Fox.

Fantastic!

Fantastic book and a FANTASTIC series!!! Definitely a book and a series to read over and over! This is a stand alone book with no cliffhangers. However, this book intertwines with the others in the series. A couple of the same scenes as other books but with different perspective, which I LOVE. I also love the author writes in the reality of relationships/people - fights, quirks, random texts, flaws, etc. You will fall in love with all the characters in this book and series!
