Summary

The Convent is the shocking true story of Marie Hargreaves, the girl who survived an evil nun’s care home from hell.

When a fancy car pulls up outside six-year-old Marie's home in 1959, her dad tells her she is going on holiday. But little does she know she will not see her home again for four long years. Her family cannot afford to keep her at home. Marie tells the story of how she was taken away from a poor but happy and loving home life to live in a convent - away from everyone and everything she holds dear. Her hair is bluntly chopped, her clothes are taken away and her name is changed. Then a horrific ritual of physical, sexual and mental abuse begins. Even after the convent closes, Marie is unable to share details of her suffering with anyone. But when a police investigation is launched, Marie realises that the time has come to tell the truth....

Being Irish and catholic

I can actually see this and totally understand what hat she is talking about nuns were the most evil creatures and we just couldn’t understand why and they were meant to look out for us . Glad she found some happiness amongst all the pain and heartaches... riveting read

Harrowing story and well narrated

The story is extremely harrowing and I truly felt like I went on Marie's horrific journey with her. The narration was good and whilst horrible to hear, it was an easy listen. I felt the anger and pain suffered and whilst certain aspects weren't detailed you knew what was happening. I would recommend

Nuns

I also attend a Convent I was very lucky the horrors that happened to Marie did not happen to me, but there's a part of me that knows these atrocities happened to poor girls thank god we are enlightened to end these appalling establishments are been found out. I was pleased Marie found happiness even though it was in the church

dissapointing

too much like Angela's ashes, sorry but could not understand why they let a Liverpudlian narrate this story when Marie was from Oldham.
glad to have it finished.

Stunning Book

I couldn't stop listening to this book. It is eye-opening on a different level and so very well-written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering it. I would thank Mrs. Hargreaves for telling her story.

trying to write this review with tears clouding my vision. The tragedy is so well written and engaging. I'm glad the author decided to share her story.

Very good memoir.

This book grabbed me from the start. I am not usually one who listens to or reads memoirs, but this one was worth it. I don't even want to get into any of what's in the book. Just listen to it, or read it.

Felt like I was there

I felt like I was there with Marie, I felt like I experienced everything and did. The writing was phenomenal and well thought out. I feel like at the end the writer gained closure with her life at the convent. Thank you Marie for writing this book and opening peoples eyes to what happens behind closed doors.

Great Book

So well told. Tragic and uplifting at the same time. Would definitely recommend for those who like memoirs.
