Story
The first time I met Hudson Rothschild was at a wedding. I’d received an unexpected invitation to one of the swankiest venues in the city. Hudson was a groomsman and quite possibly the most gorgeous man I’d ever laid eyes on. He asked me to dance, and our chemistry was off the charts. I knew it wasn’t a good idea to get involved with him, considering the wedding I was at. But our connection was intense, and I was having a great time. Though the fun came to a screeching halt when Hudson figured out I wasn’t who I’d said I was.

I was upgraded to first class on a flight from London to New York. The food, champagne, and service were impeccable. The blue-eyed man sitting next to me, even better. He was suave and intelligent. We talked and laughed, and something clicked. Fate took over and the plane was grounded, and we had an unexpected stopover for the night. With no plans, we made our own.

Lexington Dane was my brother’s best friend growing up. We did everything together. He taught me how to throw a punch, how to change a tire...and he taught me how to kiss. I fell hard and fast, and gave him all my firsts. I promised I’d wait for him.... But I’m done waiting, because he went off to college and never came back. He took his fancy business degree and moved to New York City, where he promptly became a real estate mogul - turning every penthouse and apartment project he touched into gold.

My love story all started with a letter. Only it wasn’t from the man I’d eventually fall in love with. It was from his daughter. A sweet little girl named Birdie Maxwell who’d written to the magazine that I worked for. You see, once a year my employer fulfilled a few wishes for readers. Only that column didn’t start up again for months. So I fulfilled some of her wishes myself. It was harmless…so I thought. Until one day I took things too far. While anonymously granting yet another of Birdie’s wishes, I got a look at her father.

I didn't know I was that person. You know - the one who gets the kids. But that's what the will said. June Lawler: legal guardian. All my sister's kids have ever known is San Francisco, but I have to take them back to our family's small-town farm. The last thing I'm expecting is the dark car rolling down my dirt driveway. The man who steps out of it is as rich as he is rude, and I want nothing to do with him. Even if my traitor body didn't get the message.

Dear Mr. Vega: I felt it necessary to follow up on today’s meeting, since we weren’t able to speak candidly in front of your son. I was shocked to discover that you are Ryder’s dad. I think it would be best if we just pretend that we met in person for the first time today. Your son is a very bright (flirtatious and talkative) student and since his education is a top priority for both of us, I hope I can count on you to respectfully refrain from grinning at me, using that sexy tone of voice, and undressing me with your annoyingly beautiful brown eyes....

It started out like any normal day. Then the fender bender happened. The guy I collided with drove an expensive car and was drop-dead gorgeous. Too bad he was also a total jerk. We argued over whose fault it was and any other thing that came out of his condescending mouth. Eventually, the police came and we went our separate ways. The insurance companies would have to figure things out. I had a job interview to get to anyway - one I was excited about. Though that excitement changed to disappointment the moment the person interviewing me walked in. The guy from the accident.

If people have polar opposites, Luca Rossi is mine. His butt is in the baseball hall of fame. Mine's comfortably seated in the hall of lame. When he's not snagging fly balls out in center field, he's modeling in shampoo commercials. I once jammed my own finger while stirring cookie dough, and sometimes I forget shampoo is a thing. He's a total cynic when it comes to love. I make a living writing love stories. But after my latest broken engagement (no, I don't want to talk about how many times that's happened), it's clear he's exactly the man I need.

A wonderful story with heart
- By Readers Together on 24-12-20
Summary
A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That's the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and has no desire to change his ways.
Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss. Until the day he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract-fiancée instead of PA.
What happens when two people who loathe each other have to live together and act as though they are madly in love? Sparks. That's what happens.
Can the power of love really change a person?
Will they survive the contract?
What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can't live without?

Loved the book, but loved the audio more!
I bought the book when it was first released as it was by one of my go-to authors (I've been a big fan of Melanie's for years) and wasn't disappointed.
So when I found out the audio version had been released I just HAD to get it and I loved it more than the book, John Lane & Tatiana Sokolov did a great job of bringing the book to life and I was emotionally invested (again) from the very start.
This is definitely an audiobook that I will listen to many more times.

it was alright
I've been spoilt with some great romcoms. 50 shades, the mister, beautiful disaster, crossfire series.... all were brilliant. this book wants to be up there with them, but doesn't quite get there. I think most of the reason (for me personally) was because of the 2 narrators. Both sounded too mature for their characters and a little too wooden?!
I enjoyed the story, although it was easily predictable. Richards character softened way too quick and by the end of the book, was just a pile of mush! katie however, was the kind of female character I quite liked. Unlike a lot of other female leads, Katie had a back bone, stood up for herself and didnt do that annoying thing where they tend to over analyse everything 'he' does and have an incessant need to know everything!

The Arrogance
Well...I really enjoyed the plot to the story,I fully expected your typical "assistant/boss"office hook up,but had a different twist than your usual romance. For starters...The assistant was not your"usual"gorgeous, lusty looking assistant, according to her boss(a major a$$ hole,in my opinion)she was a plain, sexless scare crow.He treated her like total $h!t for a good portion of the story and she put up with it because her situation called for her needing her job.In the "hero's"arrogance,he didn't get his promotion so he devised a plan to fix his image with the help of his straight, laced assistant. They worked it out and of course ended up falling in love.A little hard to believe but it happened none the less.If this had some"reality"to it,I'd see a divorce in their future.I think his guilt over how he treated her made him settle and his personality will certainly rear it's ugly head soon,it's not likely to change after all the years of being such a d!ck.

White America at its finest
Maybe there’s something redemptive about this a**hole but I had to bail after Chapter 4. As a black woman I’m triggered by the entire storyline. White bad boys being despicable to everyone and a system that rewards it. Company culture that demands employers be “like them” as the only way to gain acceptance or get ahead. Weak, doormat whites women who are complicit with the whole system. YUCK! Maybe it has a plot twist. But I’m too triggered to care.

Typical HEA love story
I am always hesitant to write reviews for books that are what I consider "par for the course" romances. I just give my honest opinion of the read and I don't have blogs or web sites or anything of that nature. I am just me and I like to read and listen.
This story was interesting enough to finish. It was not a story I could not put down or kept me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next. The publishers summary give a good synopsis of the book. What IS refreshing about the story line however, is the company that Richard goes to is an extremely close knit family oriented business. I think that was unique to the story. I also enjoyed how the people from said company helped the story along. The sub characters were interesting and I hope that she decides to publish their stories as well.
This is a story you can enjoy on a weekend, vacation or just to have something pleasant to listen to. If you have read my reviews before you know that I am a HUGE fan of Tatiana Sokolov. This story is atypical of what she usually narrates. She does a very good performance, but the male performer has more to read and his female voice took some getting used to.
I used a credit to purchase this because I was down on reading/listening material. I would recommend for a sale.

Sappy, predictable, and dull
Well. I seem to be on a roll of not-so-good books. This one was dull, very predicable, and sappy. If you’re going to write a story that’s been told 1000 times before, you need to put a unique and different spin on it!! There was no intrigue or happenings to make you want to know what comes next in the story. You already know. The writing was ok but needed some edge. I think 1st person would have been much better. I managed to get through all but the last 30 minutes. The end was so sappy and cheesy I couldn’t take anymore.

It's rare when I feel so emotional with a book these days, normally many romance novels are repetitive always about tragedy, but this book was real. And the author was able to express how one person can change and make a difference with unconditional love.

Not impressed
The narrators were amazing. The story not so much, it was all very predictable and unrealistic. Same rich man and naive woman that turns out to be smart and strong. Sugar and spice an everything nice or whatever. Overall it was okay but I wish there was more. There were parts I actually laughed out loud and relatable parts that made the characters interesting. It just isn't enough, I'm all up for the alpha male providing for his woman but I guess I have read all of this before.
