“The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.”

This comprehensive collection comprises unabridged recordings of the detective fiction of two of the greatest exponents of the genre—Arthur Conan Doyle and Josephine Tey—who shaped the genre in very different, complementary ways. Conan Doyle created the first modern detective, his stories shaped by the Victorian fascination with reason and the rise of forensic logic, while Tey presents subtle character studies and mysteries that often hinge on psychology rather than clues.

All of Sherlock Holmes’ adventures are included here – the four novels and five short story collections – as are all six of Tey’s novels featuring Inspector Alan Grant.

  • A Study in Scarlet
  • The Sign of Four
  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Inspector Alan Grant

  • The Franchise Affair

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859—1930) was born in Edinburgh, where he qualified as a doctor before going on to create Sherlock Holmes, one of the most vivid and enduring characters in English fiction. Holmes, whose talent for deduction was modelled on the skill of Doyle’s professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, first appeared in the full-length novel, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. While Doyle wrote other works of fiction and non-fiction, none of those captured the public’s imagination in the same way as consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend and chronicler, Dr. John Watson, who have become one of the most well-known detective duos in literature.

Josephine Tey (1896-1952) was a renowned author and one of the most celebrated figures in detective fiction. Tey initially pursued a career in theatre, writing plays before shifting her focus to novels, and her writing is characterised by psychological depth, strong character development, and a subversion of traditional crime fiction norms. Her most notable works include The Daughter of Time, Brat Farrar, and The Franchise Affair, and despite her relatively small output, her influence is significant, inspiring future generations of mystery writers. Classic Sherlock Holmes, excellently read. An introduction to Alan Grant, superbly read. I shall definitely listen again.

Not only does this have the complete Sherlock Holmes collection, read by the masterful Jonathan Keeble, but it has the Alan Grant works as well. Even if you're not necessarily a fan of the latter, you can get this for the Holmes stories and be delighted with the content, thinking of the Grant stories as an optional bonus.

Amazing value and a comprehensive collection

Jonathan Keeble does a superb job of reading the stories and I can't think that anyone could do better. I didn't get beyond the first half of the first of the Alan Grant book as the writing suffers by comparison to Conan Doyle and the reader has a strange, mechanical delivery that was very off-putting.

A masterful performance of the SH stories, AG less so

I was new to the Grant stories, I saw them as an added bonus. I enjoyed them.
Jonathan Keeble is a fantastic narrator, Karen was new to me also, I will definitely look out for her again.
A great collection of stories, well worth getting.
