Alcoholism, drug abuse, and similar destructive practices can render families dysfunctional. When the children of these families become adults, they sometimes develop self-defeating survival tactics, such as low self-esteem or an obsession with controlling another person's behavior. To help those stuck in codependent cycles identify and eliminate such troubling issues from their relationships, Beattie shares wisdom gained from years of experience.

Energy vampires exist all around us, and some of them might be less apparent than others. Taking the form of family members, close friends, and trusted coworkers, these people can effectively hide their true form and fool you into maintaining them in your life. However, just like those ever-popular Hollywood vampires, real-life energy vampires can only enter if you invite them in. If you can figure out how to spot them in your life, you can cut them out, shut the door, and limit your interactions with them so that you won’t have to suffer their toxicity.

Codependency is not a diagnosis, but rather an unhealthy, one-sided relationship dynamic. It can range from very subtle to quite extreme, when a person makes terrible sacrifices just to earn their partner’s approval. Codependency can be hard to recognize. This is why you need to know its early signs so that you can take action immediately - especially if your partner is a narcissist. Recovering from a codependent relationship with a narcissist can take years and seriously undermine your mental health, so run away as soon as possible!

When you come to rely on outside factors for validation and a sense of identity, these "do good" habits can do more harm than good. You may suddenly feel obligated to stay in a constricting relationship that turns you into a victim. Don Barlow knows firsthand the transformational effects of recovering from codependency and has compiled the knowledge he gained over the years so others can experience the same freedom.

some insight
There are some real "aha!" moments in this book but I found the section on moving on from codependency to be lacking substance - the basics are provided, I.e. increase your self esteem, but no real advice with how to start doing this, so further research and reading will be needed. The worst thing for me was the robotic voice of the narration which really made me glad it is only a three hour listen

Great book, so much information, pointed out personality traits I was not aware of, but now I have tools and resources to work with them. Made me so aware, and how much better I could do for me First, my Relationship with my Husband Second, and 3rd my husband Jeff. I really do love him, I just don't think I've been doing a very good job of it lately. That can change, listen to the book.

Very clear and straight forward. This shows the complexity of this issue and the various levels that a person can experience. Compared to other books I have read on codependency, this one leaves the reader with a positive attitude towards improving his or her situation instead of virtually condemning one to a lousy, unhappy and relatively short life like other books do.
