Summary

Prepare to lose yourself in the enchanting new novel from Kate Morton.

'My father called me Birdie; he said I was his little bird. Others knew me as his child, the clockmaker’s daughter. Edward called me his muse, his destiny. I am remembered as a thief, an imposter, a girl who rose above her station, who was not chaste. My real name, no one remembers. The truth about that summer, no one else knows.'

In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor in rural Oxfordshire. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared, a priceless heirloom is missing and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins.

Over 150 years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist’s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.

Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?

Told by multiple voices across time, The Clockmaker's Daughter is a story of murder, mystery and thievery, of art, love and loss. And flowing through it like a river is the voice of a woman who stands outside time, whose name has been forgotten by history but who has watched it all unfold: Birdie Bell, the clockmaker’s daughter.

Very enjoyable!

I have really enjoyed this novel, it’s a tale full of wonderful characters, twists, turns and a journey through the ages past and present. There are a lot of people in this book but each one is built into a wonderfully rich character. True it can be a little confusing and I found myself having to listen over again in a few places when my attention had to turn to other things briefly but that was a fault on my part rather than the author or narrator. The story twist and turns but each layer is tied into the rest with skill and the talent we have come to know and love from Kate Morton. The book was beautifully narrated by Joanne Froggert who’s skill in acting and turning characters in three dimensional people really shows through in the wonderful tale. I loved the length of this novel and I feel it gives outstanding value for money and has left me happily reliving the wonderfully descriptive world of Birchwood Manor and the events surrounding it.

Great writer, dreadful new novel...

I’m a big fan of the author but this is simply an overly long, dull and confusing book. The central mystery gets entirely lost in the quagmire of characters and tangential stories. Such a shame as it started off so well. I’m also a fan of the narrator but this was way beyond her talents. At times it felt like Su Pollard was narrating!

Sent back for refund

Really like Kate Morton’s storytelling and the strong sense of place it evokes, but I had to return this book as the pace of Joanne Froggatt’s narration is almost frantic! I’ve never returned an audio book for this reason, but 4 chapters in and I know it’s going to spoil what should be a really good listen.

Confusing

I usually enjoy Kate Morton books but I am a few hours into The Clockmaker’s Daughter and I am struggling with the story and at times, the speed of the narration. Fortunately I turned to the description of the book on audible to remind me what the story is actually about. I haven’t given up hope of immersing myself in a brilliant novel but so far it’s a bit of a chore.

A Kate Morton fan .... but this was too much.

I have just finished this book. I did enjoy it... to a point. I feel it was too long for the reader to hold it all together without at least a map/ family tree/ house plan to follow! The idea of the house being the main character of the book aka Birdie, I get and like. The literary allusions and cultural historic overtones are very interesting but I just wanted to feel with the characters and for Elodie to get to the bottom of things and find resolution, past and present. Sadly I didn’t and feel frustrated.

Awful narration

I’ve only managed to listen to about an hour of this book after several attempts. The story may be wonderful but cannot bear listening to Joanne Froggatt’s narration. It feels as if she’s trying too hard and her expression for me doesn’t fit the tone of what she’s reading. Just want to say ‘relax’! Never given up on an audiobook before.

Dreadful

I started to listen to it a second time to see if I’d missed something. Characters are flimsy and give no reason for compassion. The story jumps around and you have no idea which time and place or characters you are now following. It’s yet another chic lit period ghost story drivel fest.

hard going in a few places at first and dragged a little in a few places. got better as the story went although got quite lost between all the differwnt characters and jumping ack and forward in time. I wanted to keep listening though and enjoyed the last half a lot more.

A bit of a chore! Slow story

The overly descriptive manner of this book swamps the story line. Often I'd be listening and my mind would wander but there'd be nothing to pull my mind back to the book. I've had 4 x 40 minute drives listening to this book but there is not enough storyline to motivate me to listen to it at home. I've returned it.
