Summary

The Civil War is Julius Caesar’s personal account of his war with Pompey the Great - the war that destroyed the five-hundred-year-old Roman Republic. Caesar the victor became Caesar the dictator. In three short books, Caesar describes how, in order to defend his honor and the freedom of both himself and the Roman people, he marched on Rome and defeated the forces of Pompey and the Senate in Italy, Spain, and Greece. Julius Caesar himself was one of the most eminent writers of the age in which he lived. His “Commentaries” offer a unique opportunity to read the victor’s version of events.

Julius Caeser was born on 13 July 100 BC. His family, the Julii, claimed descent from the ancient kings of Rome and from the goddess Venus. Caesar rapidly carved out an impressive political career, forging an alliance with Pompey and Crassus in 60 BC. The Civil War is Caesar’s attempt at an explanation of the war that changed the Roman world.

Great story, poor performance

It really is something remarkable that quite a few books of the classical period have survived and are accessible to us. This is one of those titles. It’s a great read, especially if you know already something about the civil war period in Roman history. Unfortunately, the performance is not up to scratch. The reader hits a certain high note several times in each phrase at moments when you would not expect the intonation to logically go there. Very irritating, at least for me.

For lovers of military history this is a great experience

The war diary of one of the world’s greatest military tacticians. If you like first hand military history it doesn’t get better than this. Wonderfully clear writing and superbly read. Really, not to be missed.

Historical

Without context I would not recommend this short book, its quite detailed in ancient rome around the time of the civil war after the gallic wars.

Duncan’s history of Rome podcast

To enjoy the book you need a decent grasp of roman history to understand the characters and concepts and logistics - the history of Rome podcast is an amazing tool to get a great overview of the Roman republic and empire - I would listed to all 160 plus episodes and it will make this book much more interesting
