Summary

Years ago, when violent purges plunged Dún Aulin into chaos, Warden Esben Berengar was sent to restore order by any means necessary. He did so with such brutal efficiency he became known throughout Fál as the High Queen’s Monster.

All is not forgiven.

When the hunt for a mysterious enemy leads Berengar back to Dún Aulin, an old friend’s request thrusts him headfirst into danger. In the Ceremony of the Cursed Blade, the sword used by the Lord of Shadows in his conquest of Fál will change possession, and it’s up to Berengar to keep the blade from falling into the wrong hands.

To do that, he’ll have to survive vengeful goblins, bloodthirsty monster hunters, Leinster’s powerful Thieves Guild, and worse.

Much worse.

Best one so far!

I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

Narration 10/10
Well I'll just go ahead and repeat myself on what I said about the narration on the previous two books in the series since it's exactly the same:
The narration is spot on. Everything about it is the way it should be and I can't imagine it any better. For me it really brought the story to life and kept me engaged. The voice tone, the expressions even the narration speed (one of the few books I actually listened on x1.00 and didn't have to speed up to make more manageable) are just perfect.

Story 9/10
When I started the series I didn't expect much and my expectations were low, but it turned out to be really really good and I enjoyed the previous books a lot. This one though, was the best in the series so far.
After a powerful artifact is stolen from them Barengar and Morwen will enter the City of Thieves to recover it. There their adventure will start, in a treacherous place where non humans are hated and magic is forbidden. But there is more going on than meets the eye.
We get to tap a bit on Barenger's past this time around and the character build is pretty good, We also get to see some more of the world, the non human creatures with their grudges and their relations with humans and among them.
The whole story is well written and fast paced and during the last part you won't want to stop until you get to the end and see what happens.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I would suggest it to all fantasy lovers. I'll be looking forward to the release of the next chapter to the series.

Epic Read

The narrator and the story go well together. As soon as I started listening to the audio book I got sucked into the story. I would highly recommend this narrator, one of the best that I have listened to so far.
Like the previous books in this series, City of Thieves does not disappoint. There is plenty of action, suspense and adventure.
If you love The Legend of the Gods by Aaron Hodge or The Witcher (just without the sex or nudity) than this book is for you.
It had a bit of Lord of the Rings feel to it, as in a group (not chosen but more shoved together) have to find someone.
There is no sexual content or profanity but it does have some viiolence.
Can't wait for Book 4
Would highly recommend the audio book.

Very nice fantasy and narration

City of Thieves is the third book of the Warden of Fál series, written by Kyle Alexander Romines. Warden Esben Berengar has now been joined by the magician Morwen in his travels, and they are now traveling back to Dún Aulin, where they find themselves cast into a mystery that draws threads to a sinister plot regarding a missing king, a magical sword, and a bigger threat than they have faced in the previous books.

The third book was as well written as the previous entries, and the plot is somewhat more complex this time around. While the book starts out small, with Berengar and Morwen traveling and coping with minor issues, it soon develops into a larger mystery which makes for a great story, as there are many facets. We delve into racial issues and get a better understanding of more of the non-human species in the world of Fál, all of which is quite well handled by the author, and that made for very nicely done world building in my opinion. It fleshed out the world more, and made it stand out more in the sea of standard fantasy tales out there. My only major complaint about this entry, is that the ending, bad guy related, was VERY similar to the previous entry, The Blood of Kings. I would have liked a very different outcome here.

I listened to the audiobook, and Matt Addis was again amazing.

All in all, a great story that will keep you focused all the way through, and even if you read the previous entries or jump directly into the series, you will enjoy it.

I received this audiobook for free in return for a review. I have no affiliation with the author, the narrator, the publisher, or their pets (Although I am sure the latter are quite nice!).

For Fans of Skyrim...

I have thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy from Romines. Fun fantasy/grimdark series and action packed. Characters and world building are explored and enriched throughout all three books and there is plenty of scope to add more books within this world.

I had requested this, the third book, to listen to as it looked like it could be read as a standalone, and Romines very kindly gave this and the previous two with absolutely no prompting, which is incredibly generous of him.

I do think this could be read as a standalone but it reads better as part of the series, and in order. Although action packed, previous adventures and character observations/progessions aren't reiterated, so reading as a standalone could be frustrating for a new reader.

Reading these I have really wanted to replay Skyrim, but alas I cannot as the xbox is at my partners and covid lockdown means I haven't seen him or the xbox for over 3 months now.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request via Audioboom and have voluntarily left this review.

Action packed

Once again Kyle Alexander Romines action packed story of berenger the bear warden leaves up to the pace and action of the previous books.

These story’s of the warden of fal are surprisingly well written and doesn’t stall along the way.

Matt Addis performance is real well played giving each character its own personality that you can easily pick up and leads to the story telling and easy in the ears.

You won’t be disappointed with this and well worth the listen.

I’m eagerly waiting for the next instalment and hope this becomes one of many more to come.

The journey continues

I recieved a review copy of the book. The excellent story continues as we follow the main characters from the last book as their journey continues. This time the warden's past comes back to haunt him in more ways than one as a new city presents new mysteries.

“Do it and you won’t live to regret it”

Thoroughly enjoyed this series so far. A great fantasy adventure with plenty of action and great characters! I really hope there’s more coming soon and I’d love to see a Shadow War prequel are some point!?
Matt’s narration fits so well with this book. Great voices and pacing throughout; I’m a big fan!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

Best in the series!

To me, this book was the best of the 3 so far, a wonderfully written fantasy with a very good mystery storyline. I highly recommend it. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any more books set in Fál.
