AD 114: NICOPOLIS

In the depths of the desert on the empire's Eastern Frontier, the Roman army lays siege to the city of Nicopolis.

Estranged from his beloved Enica to keep her safe, centurion Flavius Ferox has secured his freedom after being framed once again. His next quest: to uncover traitors within the Roman ranks.

As the siege builds, widespread corruption seethes and soldiers are murdered in cold blood. Meanwhile, Ferox's investigation brings him closer and closer to the imperial court, and uncovers connections to Hadrian himself...

Excellent story loved the lively pace and obvious attention to detail. However, I found myself saying the injuries about to be inflicted before they happened. There are only so many ways a head can take an injury and we got them all. Stones, Arrows, Stones, Swords and Ballista bolts. With the inevitable results. I found it a bit predictable and detracted from what is otherwise a great story. Other options are equally valid.

Loved the story, but.

Loved it. I read predominantly Roman history and fiction. Adrian Goldsworthy crafts a gripping fiction interweaving it with his superb depth of knowledge on Roman History. Not one to miss!

A Historian that can write gripping fiction too. What a combination!
