Summary

Run from the past. Run from the future. Run for your lives.

He's a novice time traveler in a big universe.

Ben just wants time with the scientist's daughter who got him into this, but when he's rooked into competing in a chronothon - an Amazing Race through time - getting the girl means he'll need to make the finish line. When he finds out this competition is more than just a sprint through history, winning takes a back seat to surviving. To save the people he loves, he'll have to conquer the real dangers hidden in the shadows of the chronothon.

The world of time travelers expands in this next installment of the In Times Like These series. Fans of book one will find more to love, but new listeners can jump right in and enjoy this stand-alone story. Expect action, adventure, and romance on this journey through past and future. Fresh dangers will arise for Ben and company in a quest for the finish line, where failure to keep up will cost more than just a shot at glory - it could mean the end for them all.

Compelling adventure story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm a big fan of the author, and loved The Chronothon when it was published as an ebook. It's very clever - a young man gets tricked into taking part in a deadly race through different periods in time. The action follows him and his fellow competitors. Terrific action sequences and some clever sub-plots.

The narrator is absolutely perfect for this novel - a great voice, and he reads with at the right tempo inflection for every line in each scene. A very hard job, done exceptionally well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Chronothon?

I really enjoy the extracts from Quickly's journal at the start of each chapter. There are some terrific action sequences, but also some clever sub-plots that play out really well.

Have you listened to any of Neil Hellegers’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not familiar with the narrator's other work, but this one is excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Too long for one sitting. Excellent value!

Time travel fan? This is for you

Everything you could wNg from a time travel story, and more. And not just a story set in one time and the present. It's great. It's a stand alone sequel but it's worth enjoying the first part first in my opinion also.

this wasn't a good book, it was an awesome one

let me explain you why is this book in my opinion "awesome"

-it exploits time travel in a brilliant, intelligent and interesting way.
-it explains everything (theories, bases, places, situations, feelings) in a perfectly understandable way, as well as subtle.
-it makes a mix of adventure / science fiction / love / scary / fast phased story
-it makes it impossible to stop reading / listening to the story
-it makes every situation and every achievement real or possible to happen
-it hides a few in between the lines jokes that will definitely make you laugh
-it creates realistic and complex places, well detailed and easily imaginable
-characters are well built
-even dough this is the second book, its perfectly understandable and enjoyable without reading the first book
-most of the futuristic inventions that appear in this book are actually projects being developed nowadays
-the principal characters are mostly in their twentysomthigs but this definitely doesn't mean it can be enjoyed by a younger older audience.
-it will leave you wanting for more
-it concludes the story completely, but beautifully connects with the next book

3rd book is coming out in a few months or it has already out, depending on when you read this, so you won't have to wait long to know what happens next

hope this helps, and hope you buy this book, we need more authors as great as Nathan Van Coops

I didn't want this book to end!

Any additional comments?

"Nahtan Van Coops, I hope you can keep cranking them out as fast as I can keep devouring them," said me to this author in my mind about 50 times while I was listening to this book.

I just love a book that starts without any need for tortured and belabored backstory. You've got Ben Travers, accidental time traveler, thrown into a series of adventures with a smattering of wildly diverse characters, both friend and foe. The story just begins, and you, the reader, are off and running. You don't have to spend three chapters hearing about the hero's childhood or anything preliminary. Why are so few books written in this refreshing style? I crave more like this.

When I am on audible searching for a new book, and I read a synopsis that starts out, "Police detective Jane Doe has had a rough life - tormented by a 20 year old cold case, on probation at work for insubordination (you know, because she's so "bad ass" to her superiors and won't play by the rules!) and having just gone through a divorce...OH STOP!!! I don't want to read that book, or any other book that has the main character starting out below zero. How friggin depressing is that.

Nathan Van Coops gives us Ben, a well-adjusted, everyman's guy who's enjoying the stirrings of the first blushes of love, and who DOES play by the rules, even when the rules don't play by him: The rules being time travel, of course, and the many inconveniences associated with trying to just go on a simple date with his girlfriend, Mym.

If you're looking for an adventure story with heart, some sci-fi (not that much, as I was so willing and wanting to believe that time travel was possible), this is the book for you. The pacing is perfect, and because I don't want to give too much away, I can only say, read the first book first (In Times Like These) in order to gain more enjoyment from this book, although it certainly can stand alone because of the author's talent as a writer.

Use a credit or spend the money. You'll thank me later. And if you found this review helpful, please indicate as much. If you didn't, keep your mouse to yourself. :)

Started slow

I didn't think I was going to be able to get into this, but by the last third, I was sitting in the driveway not wanting to turn it off. Recommended.

Book 2 of a series

Very well and written and narrated. However, this is the second book of a series and I didn't know that when I listened. The book refers to previous events from the first book that takes one out of the story. The protagonist also begins the story with a good knowledge of time travel and relationships formed in the first book. Only the second book is available on Audible

Gem of a find

I have just finished this book the second in the series and about to listen to the third. What a gem of a find. Time travel well done. Kept me guessing all the way through. I did not get much sleep last night as I had to finish it. Well done Nathan Van Coops on a great series so far.

Great adventure!

Great adventure. Some humor, some romance and lots of action for everyone. I accidentally bought this one first. Now I'll be looking for the first in the series to see what I missed.

Lots of action throughout

I'm 60 & I enjoyed it. Bare hints of sex. I didn't find it extremely confusing. Good story, good narration.

OK

I enjoyed the first book in this series. While nothing unique, it was fun to follow a band of friends as they get sucked into the paradoxes of time travel.

Chronothon was more of the same. It lacked any character development. It has a pretty bland plot. Instead of 5 friends finding their way home, this time its about saving the universe. So its a little over the top. I also didn't appreciate the future world Van Coops created. It was kind of dumb.

So... three stars might be a little generous. But I still finished it. So it wasn't all bad.
