Summary

Ziri Mokuru has lived her entire life in the rural village of Arden Hollow on the planet Tersi. While her parents are off having adventures and being Very Important People, she's struggled simply to find a place where she belongs. One night, she investigates a disturbance in her home and discovers an armor-clad man sorting through her belongings. Her first thought is for her parents' safety, not to question why this man is in her home late at night without even the courtesy of knocking. After all, no one among the trusting Tersii breaks into someone else's home without a good reason.

Ryn abid Alna has an excellent reason for sneaking into Ziri's home. After years spent scraping together enough vud for the bride price, he's finally ready to steal a wife. One look at Ziri's sweet smile and Ryn decides no other woman will do. She can fix anything she touches, so why not the loneliness he's lived with since he was enslaved as a young boy?

Though Ziri longs for love, she's not so sure she's ready to settle down with the man who kidnapped her, especially after he jumps her into a nest of Sweepers, a sinister alien race bent on mayhem and destruction. As the day draws near when she faces Ryn's family on the Choosing field, Ziri ponders the hardest decision of her life: Fight for Ryn and the place he's made for her in his heart or choose another man as a life mate and risk never knowing love.

Great narration!!

The Choosing is an entertaining sci-fi romance with exciting worldbuilding. The premise for the story is excellent; however, the execution, to some extent, lacked. The characters are great, but I didn't like how bad Ziri treated Ryn, I actually felt bad for the guy. The narration by Angel Clark and Matthew Josdal is excellent. They portrayed the characters very well, and I really enjoyed their performance. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

He Chose Her But Will She Choose Him Too

Title: The Choosing
Author: Lucy Varna
Format: Audio
Narrator: Angel Clark, Matthew Josdal
Genre: SciFi Alien Romance, military, forced proximity, enemies to lovers
Standalone: Yes
Part of a Series: Book one of The Pruxnae
POV: Ziri, Bryn
4/5

The Pruxnae are an alien race whose females are massively outnumbered by the males so they steal their potential brides. I like how Lucy Varna builds both the tension and the love between the characters. I like how Ziri is stronger than she seems and give Ryn a run for the money, not making it easy on him. I liked finding out what The Choosing entailed and seeing more of Alna and Gared from Thief of Hearts. I look forward to seeing what lies ahead for the Pruxnae.

I received this audiobook for free from StoryOrigin. This is my honest and voluntary review.

surprisingly good!

Very well written book. Had my full attention throughout the journey. my only dislike had to be the lack of confidence and ensuing misunderstandings

The Choosing - slow not bad, but slow.

Would you try another book from Lucy Varna and/or Angel Clark and Matthew Josdal ?

Yeah I would, I loved her story line, however, it needed to pep it up some. I got half way through the book and stopped. I read 3 other books and then came back to this one. Again, I liked the story line, just that there were very slow spots.

If you’ve listened to books by Lucy Varna before, how does this one compare?

I have not, this was my first story.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Interesting, I think the narrator was fine, but could have also been a little more peppy. Again, very seldom do I start a book and stop in the middle. I almost wasn't going to finish, but I came back and did. It was a good story, just slow.

Did The Choosing inspire you to do anything?

No, only to give it a rest - read 3 more exciting books with a faster pace.

Any additional comments?

I hate to give negative reviews. I really liked this story when I finally finished it. I did like the characters but the pace was just too slow. An author has to keep the reader's mind engaged. Again I loved the story. I don't want to be negative. So please Lucy Varna don't feel bad. Just speed up some of the story-line in the future.

The Choosing

This is book 1 of the Pruxnae series and it was good. I listened to books 0.5, 2, and 3 first, then I listened to book 1. Although it was good, it was not as good as the other books. Angel Clark and Matthew Josdal did a very good job with the narration. I received this free copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

What a phenomenal book!!

This is definitely not your traditional love story. But it is so much better!! Ren was the perfect gentleman and I'm truly happy that he and Ziri were there for one another. He definitely saved her life just as much as she saved his.

Different

Would you listen to The Choosing again? Why?

Not really.

What other book might you compare The Choosing to and why?

I compare it to the hunger games except instead of fighting for food they are fighting for love.

Have you listened to any of Angel Clark and Matthew Josdal ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Angel Clark before and I have to say she did an amazing job narrating.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes because I wanted to know what Ziri will do next.

book 2 - The Pruxnae

This is book 2 in Varna's series The Pruxnae. A sci-fi romance that has action, adventure, kidnapping, romance and steamy chemistry. Main characters are Ziri Mokuru, kidnapped by Ryn abid Alna in a raid of her planet in hopes of finding a bride. While Ziri never really found her place on her planet it was her home with loving parents. Ryn has taken her away from everything she's ever known but given her adventures she's always dreamed of. Will that be enough to win her heart? Full of self doubts these two lack communication from the very beginning and find themselves struggling. Will they be able to overcome their lack of communication and doubt to find what they both truly desire?!?
Narration was very well done. Love the dual narration that helped keep characters separate and brought them both to life. Smooth tones and easy to listen to and follow the storyline.

Romantic read, love it! Excellent narration

I enjoyed this Audio Book very much!
This is the second book I read about the Pruxnae, and I’m so happy I got to know these strange, sweet, hot aliens, with their unusual customs (like kidnaping).
I like the story, writing style and world building.
I especially loved the first half, where the emphasis is on the romance instead of on the drama.
Nothing to serious, just an enjoyable and relaxing read.

Narration was excellent, and that made the book even more enjoyable.
I’m listening to Book 2 now and it’s so much fun! Highly recommend this series!

I got this Audio Book for free (thanks!). I'm voluntarily leaving this review.

Good start to a promising series

This story was some wonderful world building with a great concept for sci-fi romance -men from one planet kidnaps women from another planet and forces the women to choose them in a fight against that man's family for their hand in marriage. (I know, right!) Ziri was the kidnapped; Ryn was the kidnappee. It took them a minute to warm to each other and that was the beauty of this story. They were both strong and capable in their own rights, and in their own cultures, so bending to accommodate was a bit of a struggle.

The only issue I had with this story was the actual choosing. The lead up to it and the immediate aftermath was a bit too angsty. There was no need for the handwringing, the self-doubt, and the self-deprecation. They both should have gone into it strong and ready to face the world. Still, this was a great listen with some seriously icky alien bad guys!

I loved both the narrators. They delivered a very complete and believable performance. The story was told from both Ziri's and Ryn's POV, which was a perfect choice.

Surprisingly enjoyable.

I received the audio for free. I like this sci-fi romance. The Pruxnae are farmers and / or warriors. Low female birth rates force them to kidnap their mates from other planets. Ryn has saved for his own ship and a place on the next raiding vessel so he can find a wife. He kidnaps Ziri from the planet Tersi. I liked both Ziri and Ryn. Ryn was patient and Ziri was smart. They worked well together. There were some silly misunderstandings but all was quickly resolved. The dual narration was very good as well. I've already started listening to the next book in the series.
