Summary

The obituaries for Gerald Candless were respectful. He had been, after all, an admired and popular writer, and his sudden death at his home in Devon was a loss to literature as well as to his family and friends.

The trouble was, as his daughter Sarah soon discovered, that it seemed that her father had taken on a different identity that he wasn't Gerald Candless at all. But if he wasn't Gerald Candless, who was he?

WONDERFUL!

This is one of the best books I've listened to recently - and I listen to a lot! Frances Barber is a brilliant narrator, and the plot is very clever - keeps you guessing until the end. The characters are believable and interesting. The title is explained eventually - intriguing. One of those books you don't want to put down. Highly recommended.

Haunting story, wonderfully performed

Any additional comments?

Barbara Vine rarely disappoints and this is one of her most haunting and memorable novels. There are the usual twists and turns and guessing games going on - I never quite buy her female protagonists, they are usually very cold and aloof - but that doesn't stop this being an intriguing and addictive listen.

Strangely captivating

Slow, unconventional, uncomfortable. A mesmerising unfurling discovering how 'family' might feel on the inside

Brilliant

Very well read.
Gripping throughout.
The end however felt slightly rushed and left me wanting more.
Perhaps that’s a good thing?
Will definitely seek out more books by this author!

Wow

Good story, some parts were predictable but the ending was disturbing and felt incomplete.

Expertly written, beautifully read

Intelligent story telling as you would expect from Barbara Vine and characters brought to life by Frances Barber's narration. Loved it!

Masterly unfolding of a riveting story

I enjoyed this enormously and had no expectation of doing so. It has been years since I read anything by Barbara Vine and had quite forgotten what a brilliant teller of tales she is .
Frances Barber’s performance is first class. A perfect combination.

Engaging entertaining mystery

A new author under this name but I have Ruth Randall books, I did find the book easy to follow and had worked out the plot unfortunately it doesn't give the total ending so left wondering if the the main character killed his brother or not and that is why he reinvented himself from John to Gerald, an abrupt ending, narration was good and added to the storyline
