Summary
When a paragraph in an evening newspaper reveals a decades-old tragedy, most readers barely give it a glance. But for three strangers, it's impossible to ignore.
For one woman it's a reminder of the worst thing that ever happened to her.
For another it's the dangerous possibility that her darkest secret is about to be discovered.
And for a third, a journalist, it's the first clue in a hunt to uncover the truth.
The Child's story will be told.
Critic reviews
"The narration is excellent and I would say it is more like listening to a dramatisation than a reading." (Iris on The Widow)
"Clare Corbett is a fabulous narrator." (Chris on The Missing)
"Honourable mention should go to the narrator who is *phenomenal*. Great dramatic performance AND she's very good at the many different international and regional accents, which is often such an irritation. Can't praise it highly (or articulately) enough." (Jo on The Power)
"The narration was the best I've ever heard on an audiobook. Wonderful." (Raine on The Power)
"Mention must also go to Finty Williams for some beautiful characterisation and a warm and textured performance." (Simon on The Girl with All the Gifts)
"I thought Finty Williams was perfect!" (Z. OConnor on The Girl Before)
"The reading too is excellent, Fenella Woolgar added an extra dimension to what is an excellent novel. Her characterisation was superb, and her wonderful modulation kept me spellbound." (Pj on Life After Life)
"It is beautifully read, with a wide range of distinctive character voices - another triumph for Steven Pacey!" (Jill on Let the Right One In)

An enjoyable story with twists and turns.
I enjoyed The Widow & found The Child just as gripping a tale. I enjoyed the narration too & ended up listening almost non-stop, & was quite caught out by the ending!

Gripping
Thoroughly gripped by this book and left me with goosebumps at the end. The story and performance of the readers left me feeling I was there with the characters. A super read, with a great twist that I didn't see coming! Enjoy!

An addictive listen
I really enjoyed this book, and the different voices for the characters works well. The only thing i found a little irritating is when the women narrating try to use a male voice, it detracts from some of the tension at times.

Enjoyed the story, the narration let it down
I enjoyed the story and how it was presented. Some bits were a bit predictable but still a good book.
The narrator that is the voice of Angela was very annoying. The constant shrieking was unrealistic and off putting. Granted, her character was deeply distressed, but shrieking is just not necessary.

Brilliant!
Narration is great. Like that each character is narrated by a different person.
Storyline is gripping. I only realised the ending just before it was told and shouted out loud in my car oh I know the ending!! I was right but it didn’t spoil it!!

Gripping and Emotional
This second novel by Fiona Barton is even better than the first. I was completely enthralled by each of the characters individual stories as well as how they intertwined. I did guess the twist but not til very late in the novel. This narrators are excellent- especially Corbett. I would highly recommend you listen to this if you like mysteries with an emotional element.
