Not so complete guide to hypnobirthing

It was a very factual book, however completely missed the mark when it comes to being a complete guide to hypnobirthing. She spent a long time telling us how valuable hypnobirthing is but did not manage to explain how to achieve these results as the book title lead me to believe.

2 hours in and still advertising other services

Starts off as a humourous and positive guide to birthing but after 2 hours of listening I'm still being told to sign up to the other services they offer and how worth while the the cost is, what I'll gain from the services and techniques... and not actually teaching me the techniques.

may get better if you can stick with it but I wasn't that impressed.

The best gift to yourself mama!

This book is fab. Everything is presented in a natural, respectful, down to earth way. They truly wish to empower you to have a positive a birth and equip you with the skills, knowledge and strength to own your own birth. I'm so glad I bought this book for myself and I think it's one of the best things you can try on the lead up to your birthing day!

Converted within the first 10 pages!

Initially sceptical about “hippy hypno-birth types” having given this book a chance with the audio version, I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it resonated with me. I went on to buy the hard copy of the book after hearing the first 10 pages. While I still listened to the audio book in full, I found it useful to have to hard copy too, for easy reference.
This book is a game changer and really made me wake up to the fact that I actually knew so little about the birth process and that on my first birth before discovering TCBM I had actually made my birth harder by not being educated in the process. This book covers everything and will leave you with invaluable life tools for stress management as well.
Cannot recommend it enough to mothers to be!!!

Good short overview of Hypnobirthing

I liked this book for being concise, thorough, and well thought out. When I first began learning about Hypnobirthing it was a great starting point as classes were not offered in my area and some of the longer books I began with felt like too much info from the start. I was essentially weeding through them to get basic knowledge. This broke it down and still offered the necessary information to have the full Hypnobirthing experience even if you decide to research no further. It's also great for women who want a Hypnobirth but do not necessarily want to subscribe fully to all natural birthing. This book supports using the method no matter what path you take...some of the others seem more opinionated about correct natural birthing choices.

I've also read the Hypnobirthing Home Study course (which is much longer but full of good info, especially if your determined to have a fully natural birth) and Mindful Birthing (which is a good overview of incorporating mindfulness into the process). Both have also been very helpful for me as I view mindfulness as essentially in the same family of theories and methods and I am a previous therapist who utilized both skills in my profession.

However, if I had to choose only one of the 3, I'd pick the Calm Birth Method for all the reasons I stated above. Good luck ladies!

This is more of a commercial than a book

I’m disappointed with this book. It felt more like an ad for their other services (MP3s, an online course they offer, their Facebook group, ect) than giving actual advice. There are tons of birth stories intertwined into the book and all of them kept repeating “I’m so happy I learned the calm birth school method”...but I kept thinking to myself, when am I going to learn the method? Or do I have to buy all their other crap to get it? Anyways, I don’t recommend this book and I feel pretty swindled. Not saying I got nothing out of it, but it got to the point where I was getting pretty annoyed every time they mentioned all their other services as if they invented pranayama breathing techniques. When I read a book I don’t expect to have commercial breaks.

Great patience test

This book doesn’t seem to get to the point. After an hour of listening, we still had no idea what hypnobirthing is about.

Most of this hour was filled with selling the idea of hypnobirthing which, after having already made the decision to buy the book, seems a little redundant.

It’s sometimes hard to understand the narrator’s accent, so it’s also not an easy listen for non-Brits.

Maybe the book gets better later- we decided not to waste more time trying to find out.

This book = GOLD

I am SO glad I listened to this book. Because of the author's calming voice, it was easy to listen to and understand. I firmly believe that without this book my birth would not have been as beautiful and positive as it was. The calm breathing technique it teaches you was life changing and I STILL use it certain situations today. I tried reading 'Ina May's Guide to Childbirth' and it was way too structured and honestly scary sounding. After a few chapters into that book I started to question if hypnobirthing was really my route to go, then I listened to this book. Suzy Ashworth brings hypnobirthing to a relatable scale and gives you ALL scenarios you can use it in - not just the "birth at home method" that Ina May forces in her book. Get this book, you will not regret it.

Waste of time

It spends half the book telling you to breath during labor and to stay calm but doesn’t tell you HOW to do it.
Almost most of the birth story’s on here are we on getting epidurals. Which is the opposite of what most women buy this book for.

Straight to the point

I actually found this audio book about 5 days before I gave birth and it helped me tremendously during labor. Now if you are new to breathing, mediation and centering, you probably should pick up this book a lot sooner than I did, but if you are a seasoned mediation practitioner, like myself, then you should be just fine. I love how the author has you master just 3 types of breathing exercises for each stage of labor! Simplicity is king in my book, especially if you are trying to push out a small human being from your lady bits. It was easy to direct my labor support team, my sister and husband, to help me stay focused on counting my breath for me, especially just before the pushing phase where the sensations became more intense. The only thing I wish that the book made clear is that the “pain” of labor is more about the combinations of different sensations (e.g. cramping, pressure, aches, etc) and that these sensations aren’t anything to fear. I did like how much emphasis was put on being in the moment during each wave while relishing and re-centering your breath bc as relaxing at the end of them. This method helped me to have the birthing experience I wanted - an unmediated vaginal birth with no perineal tearing. This book is worth every cent!

A book worth your time!!

I enjoyed the mixture of personal birth stories with tools and education about how to have a calm birth. Suzy Ashworth is direct with the information but also provides a lightness and reassurance that is much needed. I’m so glad I found this book!

Listened 3x

This is very much a "you can do this, here's what to expect and how to stay calm" book. Full of positive birth stories of ALL kinds, as well as how to handle situations and what you deserve as a birthing mama. Empowering, confidence boosting, and equipping. She does mention her MP3's a few times, because they go along with this book. I didn't have access to them and this book was still helpful and I can't recommend it enough, if only just to reframe your mind to prepare for a wonderful birth. And Suzy's voice is fantastic to listen to.

If you read no other birth books read this one!

This is my fourth birth and I still found this book so incredibly helpful, inspiring, and amazing. Please read this book! You will feel so calm and empowered. I have read many, many birth books and this was BY FAR the best.

Not sure about this one.

Great narrator, easy to listen to, I like the author's casual and straightforward style. Too much prattling on about how great the method is though. Wish the chapters were labeled. I'm in chapter 4 (45min in) and so far, she's just been repeating the same redundant lines and self - promotion over and over, with a few birth stories praising the method. Still haven't heard anything truly informative or instructive. Putting me to sleep now, but I will give it a chance. I like Hypnobirthing better, but am hoping there will be good complimentary exercises to reinforce what Ive already been practicing. Will update this review after the birth in 4-6wks!
