Summary

Written by the best-selling author of The Ice Man, The Butcher is a gripping and disturbing fly-on-the-wall account of the US Drug Enforcement Administration's four-year hunt to bring down Tommy 'Karate' Pitera, a drug-dealing, murderous capo in the Bonanno crime family.

In 1992, Pitera was sentenced to life in prison for murdering six people and supporting a massive drug-dealing operation. Yet this covered only a fraction of the crimes he committed. Pitera is thought to have murdered more than 60 people, cutting many of his victims into pieces before burying them on Staten Island. Exhaustively researched and written with the cooperation of the DEA agents who hunted Pitera down, The Butcher will send shivers down the spine of the most hardened reader.

Philip Carlo was the author of the international best seller The Ice Man, as well as The Night Stalker, Gaspipe and The Killer Within. He lived in New York until his death in November 2010.

Critic reviews

"With brutal honesty, Philip Carlo writes from the heart” (Robert De Niro)
“Mafia master Carlo is the unrivalled king of true crime writing. He examines Pitera's psyche with forensic scrutiny but stops short of glamorising his subject. Grisly and gruesome, Scorcese should definitely buy up the movie rights” ( News of the World)
“Engrossing and chilling… a fast-moving and morbidly fascinating story” ( Booklist)

Chilling

Tommy patera kills, cuts up and buries his victims. You will hear this over 100 times in this book, its gets very repetative. Do not let this put you off. Its a very good story.

A good story

So nice to listen to a book that was read with the listener in mind instead of using it as an opportunity to sell the narrators “talent” for voiceovers!

Excellent

I have read and listened to many books about the Mafia but this one I found particularly unnerving. THe narators voice add to the overall atmosphere and is really spine chilling in some part.

Sickening

The story of a warped mind, developed from childhood bullying. This is a truly shocking tale of a true psychopath whom I have no doubt, if he had not been developed by the Mafia, would have gone on to be a serial killer anyway. Not for the faint hearted, the graphic descriptions of the crimes are truly sickening. A psychopath who gained great pleasure out of killing and cutting up and disposing of the bodies.

Quite a decent listen

I quite enjoyed listening to this audiobook, there was enough gory details for me....wish there was more. It’s a decent look at inside the mafia structure and how killing someone needed approval or revenge if you didn’t get approval. The main protagonist was in my eyes a serial killer, he really enjoyed what he was doing. The worlds better off without him. If you’re into mafia related stuff I’d highly recommend this. This is the real dead NOT like his other book The Iceman....this audiobook explains one killing where the Iceman said he done....its lies he wasn’t there at all but you do find out who done the killing. STAY away from The Iceman by Philip Carlo as it’s full of fantasies !
