Summary

Written by the best-selling author of The Ice Man, The Butcher is a gripping and disturbing fly-on-the-wall account of the US Drug Enforcement Administration's four-year hunt to bring down Tommy 'Karate' Pitera, a drug-dealing, murderous capo in the Bonanno crime family.

In 1992, Pitera was sentenced to life in prison for murdering six people and supporting a massive drug-dealing operation. Yet this covered only a fraction of the crimes he committed. Pitera is thought to have murdered more than 60 people, cutting many of his victims into pieces before burying them on Staten Island. Exhaustively researched and written with the cooperation of the DEA agents who hunted Pitera down, The Butcher will send shivers down the spine of the most hardened reader.

Philip Carlo was the author of the international best seller The Ice Man, as well as The Night Stalker, Gaspipe and The Killer Within. He lived in New York until his death in November 2010.

Critic reviews

"With brutal honesty, Philip Carlo writes from the heart” (Robert De Niro)
“Mafia master Carlo is the unrivalled king of true crime writing. He examines Pitera's psyche with forensic scrutiny but stops short of glamorising his subject. Grisly and gruesome, Scorcese should definitely buy up the movie rights” ( News of the World)
“Engrossing and chilling… a fast-moving and morbidly fascinating story” ( Booklist)

Sickening

The story of a warped mind, developed from childhood bullying. This is a truly shocking tale of a true psychopath whom I have no doubt, if he had not been developed by the Mafia, would have gone on to be a serial killer anyway. Not for the faint hearted, the graphic descriptions of the crimes are truly sickening. A psychopath who gained great pleasure out of killing and cutting up and disposing of the bodies.

Interesting story but it just tries too hard.

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who watch no TV nor movies. You have to be very sensitive to gore to be moved to the depth the author wants you to be moved, by the fact that the mafia killer cut his victims into six pieces and buried them in cheap suitcases in a bird sanctuary.

Would you ever listen to anything by Philip Carlo again?

I'm not sure. He just tries too hard to awe us with the macabre of the crime. He repeats it way too often with too great emphasis, as if he himself wasn't sure it's gore enough to be of interest.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Well read, good acting.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I think that TV and cinema desensitised me to the point of fear for my humanity.
