Summary

"He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze." (The Song of David (2 Samuel 22:35))

The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare (author of The Witch of Blackbird Pond) won the Newbery Medal in 1962. This gripping, action-packed novel tells the story of 18-year-old Daniel bar Jamin - a fierce, hotheaded young man bent on revenging his father’s death by forcing the Romans from his land of Israel. Daniel’s palpable hatred for Romans wanes only when he starts to hear the gentle lessons of the traveling carpenter, Jesus of Nazareth.

A fast-paced, suspenseful, vividly wrought tale of friendship, loyalty, the idea of home, community, and ultimately, as Jesus says to Daniel: “Can’t you see, Daniel, it is hate that is the enemy? Not men. Hate does not die with killing. It only springs up a hundredfold. The only thing stronger than hate is love.”

A powerful, relevant listen in turbulent times.

Travel back in time with The Bronze Bow

I was pulled into the life of Daniel bar Jamin and held on for the duration of the ride. Character development in this book was phenomenal! I understood Daniel on a deeper level and witnessed his ability to climb out of a belief system that held him captive. Readers experience a history lesson while undergoing spiritual enlightenment. I listened to this book in entirety more than twice in one week. I highly recommend this book for young readers.

Newberry Winner

Wonderful story of forgiveness and redemption, particularly for teens and tweens. Historically accurate, but driven with a fresh perspective on the life of Christ as seen by an angry young Jew.

Amazing and fully written

A tale of vengeance and sorrow. An amazing storyline including things that make you wonder and want to listen more. One of the best books I have ever listened to.
