Summary

Shortlisted: Women’s Prize for Fiction 2022

An achingly beautiful novel of abuse, redemption and hope. Alethea Lopez is about to turn 40. At work at a fashion boutique in Port of Spain, she’s fashionable, feisty and fiercely independent. But behind closed doors, she’s covering up bruises from her abusive partner and seeking solace in an affair with her boss.

When Alethea witnesses a woman murdered by a jealous lover, the reality of her own future comes a little too close to home. As she unravels memories repressed since childhood and faces up to the darkness of her relationship, she must understand the person she’s become and decide on the woman she wants to be....

Critic reviews

"An extraordinary and emotionally immersive novel–the music of Lisa Allen-Agostini's writing voice is gloriously specific to Trinidad, yet this heart-wrenching story of a woman both liberated and in need of liberation has universal resonance." (Margaret Busby)

"You dip into the first page and don't come up for breath until the last...thoroughly enjoyable." (Kei Miller)

Powerful but heart wrenching.

This book is a powerfully written story, and the story is powerful because it’s written in first hand account.

The main character Alethia is a woman who has known no love as a result of her circumstances, but her survival is a testament to the human resilience.
It is a very difficult but very worthy read as these sort of stories need to be told.

The reader’s performance was excellent, and I particularly enjoyed hearing the beautiful lilt of Trinidadian Creole. I would not recommend this as a holiday read, but something that informs and educates people about an extremely difficult existence. It could also help people in the helping profession to understand trauma survivors.

I congratulate the author. It has been a privilege to gain some insight through this book.

Inspirational and so well read

I am so glad I got this on audible, the authors Trinidadian dialect really brought this amazing story alive for me. The main character Alicia’s story is so tragic but also life affirming. It’s not a book for the faint hearted, dealing with heard hitting issues of domestic abuse and incest but it still manages to be always vibrant and ultimately uplifting. I highly recommend it.

So tangible I could touch it!

This book touches on so many social issues. Most of these issues cut so deep however the humorous delivery made it a little bit easy to bare . Ms Ali is a personal favourite of mine even though she is a fictional character ✨❤️

A beautifully written and narrated story which cuts right to the bone of domestic abuse. Ms Allen-Agostini says in her acknowledgements that it is not based on her life or anyone she knows or a story that has been related to her. But she manages to craft the story in such a way that one has the impression that only someone who has experienced these things could describe them so chillingly well. Not for the faint-hearted.
The joy and soul in the story counter the dark side and the ending is one of love and hope.

Loved the story

I absolutely loved the story
I also really liked the narration it was just difficult to understand at times. I could’ve done with looking at some of the words on paper while listening to it. Other than that I really enjoyed it.

Authentic

I would definitely recommend this book, refreshingly powerful to listen to an author/ narrator from the Caribbean that did not hold back with they story and her authentic accent was just the cherry on top !

very interesting 👌🏿

Being of English heritage, it took me a little while to get used to the accent. The story drew me in, and I got use to the accent and its location. Excellent fiction.
