Brilliant

I couldn't put this one down despite the dark subject matter. I really wanted to see the evil Samuel get his comeuppance and the ending didnt disappoint. I loved the bittersweet second chance romance between Luke and Sophie. A fantastic listen made more so by the excellent narration. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy.

Worth listening to...

The Boy in the Barn is really a very good book. I thoroughly enjoyed listening and will definitely try future books by this author. The publisher’s summary gives more than enough information. There is a cautionary statement towards the end that warns possible listeners that this book is not for “the faint of heart “. As the story opens on the scene of a man in the process of being castrated, I think I would tend to agree. The book follows Sophie, a woman who escaped an abusive home. She’s 16 and pregnant. The baby’s father was also an abused child that Sophie discovers badly beaten in an unused barn on the family property. I am only giving the story four stars because the ending seemed a bit contrived. It wrapped up a little too quickly with a happily ever after. J. Scott Bennett does a fantastic job narrating. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.

Fantastic Story but not for the Squeamish

I really loved this book. The story continued to evolve and wind together the different parts at a very satisfying speed. The narrator was great. There are some parts that depict extreme violence but it's pertinent to the story to betray the evil that lives in one of the characters. It is only a minor part of the overall story but it does start off this way so don't be turned off. Keep going and what develops is a very heartwarming story of good over evil.

Terrible Narrator

I could only listen to about 30 minutes of this book before deleting it. The narration was horrible in my opinion. He drags out his words to almost a hiss at the end of each sentence. He does a terrible job at differentiating his voice for different characters. They all sounded the same. I was hoping the story itself would be enough to keep me listening, but I don't understand all the hype. It never grabbed me, and I completely wasted a credit.

all over the place

The story is good, BUT all over the place. I found myself very confused at times and having to rewind and re-listen. This is definitely a book that I would have preferred a physical copy to read rather than listen.

A boy in the barn is a must read

First let me say that if you are triggered by descriptions of physical or sexual abuse this might not be the book for you as it does take you to some very dark places however it is an amazing story. I laughed, I cried, I was frozen in fear at times. I was so spellbound by this book I could not stop listening. There were times that I wanted to jump into the book and defend the characters. The narrorator is one of my faves so no suprise the narration was amazing.
