Summary

In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha - one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles and make a powerful choice.

Cool story, but..

Performance for this was very disappointing. Narrators were good but sometimes when they would whisper it was extremely hard to hear and then suddenly they would talk normal voice or louder and it would make you toggle the volume all the time instead of enjoying the book.

The short summary of the book immediately caught my eye. I mean, for me it's hard to say no for witches & magic in general. Story and idea wise I would have given 4 star, but and it's a BIG but, how it's written (and with audio recorded) I'm only giving 3 star.

The story idea itself is so cool but the narrative and two story timelines makes it so difficult to focus on (at least for me). First few chapters I had to relisten because I would be so confused by the two narratives and frankly (in my opinion) it doesn't add that much to the story (now thinking back after finishing the book).

I still recommend the book, just don't have your hopes too high up :)

Good book, terrible performance.

Interesting book with a complicated story line to keep you captivated. The lady who does the audio is absolutely terrible though, she makes every character sound like there going to burst into tears with her whiney and shakey voice and when she reads the mens parts she sounds like a talking dog. Honestly I could go the rest of my life without hearing her voice again and die happy.

Awesome!

This was the first Series of books I have listened to by this author. If you adore fantasy, good battling against evil, dragons and other mythical beasts then this is the series for you! It maybe classed as a YA but, if like me, your inner child cries out for a bedtime story then you will not be disappointed! True there is more romance in the 2nd and 3rd book of the series but the tale is woven deftly and the imagery beautiful. Will be listening to this series again and again.
Warning: If you get caught up in the story, you won't get much sleep until the last line of the 3rd book! Enjoy!

Weird pacing but interesting read

I liked the story, but the pacing and setting threw me off. Some parts are in a current setting, and some in a past. But the relationship between the two are jarring. I can feel what Rin was going for, but it just... confused me and I did not think it brought anything to the story.
the last "present" setting felt more like a spoiler than anything else.
The performance of the cast is good. Lots of range and feeling.

I am enjoying the series although it's long winded

I am enjoying this series so far, I have only 2 things that I am not overly happy about.

One is the long winded bits where skipping over details would have made it a bit better, although I know I do get bored easily.
The other is that although the narrator is great at voices, she often makes the heroine sound like she's on the verge of tears when she is saying normal things, it makes her sound weak, whiney and unlikeable, whereas, with a different way of reading the words, the heroine could have sounded more like her character which is determined and stubborn.

Saying that I will carry on as it's a good story.

Meh

Story has good premise, but feels like a knock off shadow and bone attempt.

Don’t understand the role Asha’s are meant to play in the wider world of the book other then to entertain foreign men??? That part left me very confused as to why these ‘powerful’ women were booked out like ladies of the night.

I also found young tea to be very winey, now wether that’s the writing or the narrator I’m not sure.

Badly mixed the levels are off.

One second whispers you cant hear the next shouting male voice. impossible to listen to at a constant volume.

A Good start

The book had an amazing opening. very interesting. intriguing. you really want to know more about Tea and her brother. and the world around her.

I absolutely loved the male narrator. what an absolute joy listening to him unveil and turn the page at the end of each chapter. what an amazing performance.

the female narrator while good had a major issue with volume. I kept adjusting the volume multiple times. Heck everytime a male character speaks you almost always have to raise the volume.

what kept me going was the present time storyline. meanwhile the past story plot kept devolving once Tea started her apprenticeship.
it went from magic and necromancy and a world full of wonders to explore. to..... playing dressup? dancing? attending parties for the nobles? and no one actually taught her anything for the longest part of the book... about anything! or anyone!. so much time was wasted. while ignoring the most intriguing things that the story started with.

her undead brother.
the world.
deavas
the faceless
the old gods (1 chapter talked about them in a "play" and that's about it)
the dark prince.

and so many things. such a waste of potential.

fortunately the story ended in a good cliffhanger. promising to explore book 2.

Not the Best Ending!

Loved this book up to the last chapter.... then it ended too quickly with lots unexplained. Such a shame!
