Story
The Three Taps is the first of Ronald Knox’s detective stories to feature private investigator Miles Bredon. In this case, Miles is sent by his employer - the appropriately named Incredible Insurance Company - to investigate the death of Mr. Mottram, who recently took out one of their so-called Euthanasia policies. The victim was clearly gassed; but whether it was an accident or planned is a matter for some debate.

Summary
Private investigator Miles Bredon is spending a weekend with his wife, Angela, at the Halliford’s country house. The occasion is a singularly ill-assorted, and ill-fated, house party and Miles soon wishes he hadn’t bothered. Myrtle Halliford cajoles her guests into joining in with an "eloping game", which involves chasing cars across the countryside at night; but the following morning, the body of one of the guests - a man of influence and affluence - is discovered in the silo....
Was his death an accident caused by fumes of poisonous gas; or was it suicide? Before long, Inspector Leyland of Scotland Yard turns up, incognito, to help Miles and Angela solve the mystery.

Traditional mystery from a deconstructionist
Knox likes to play with the rules of the mystery genre but he is closest to convention in this. As in his previous work, whether murder, suicide or accident is to blame for the death is a question as much as who the killer would be if a murder occurred but it 'feels' more traditional this time. Perhaps it's because he's played this game before, perhaps because it takes place in one of the country houses Christie is fond of using, with a cast of suspicious guests. Sadly, some of them aren't fleshed out very deeply, but the returning cast more than make up for this. Satisfying solution in my eyes.. The reader pulled me through this in an afternoon so I can't praise the voicing more.
