Summary

Yaro Anatoly commands the most feared regiment on the continent. His loyalty to the king has seen him wage war in the savage wilderness of Vorgar, the lawless free cities, and in Akasha, the domain of the southern princes.

But when the death of a saint triggers a revolution at home, Yaro finds his own loyalties divided. Can he really serve a king who hates his own people? And who are these new gods?

The Black Hussars is a stand-alone novella, set in the days prior to the events that unfold in the Plagueborne trilogy.

The black hussars

I received a free review copy of this audio book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a short story and while I found the story good, I just didn't enjoy the narration at all.
There was also music playing over the narration and I had to keep going back because it was just to distracting.
The story is good so I might try the main series but only with a different narrator and no music! (Sorry)

The Black Hussars

An enjoyable story and I’d happily listen to the rest of the series.
Scott reads the story well and some of his voices are really great, although the female narrator seems a little stiff and ‘edited’ in. The odd musical addition doesn’t really add to the story though.
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

A solid introduction

For what it is, this short story does its job very well. It introduces you to the world, gives you some excitement, and leaves you wanting more. It's like a super-prologue, and I can only hope that the main titles live up to the promise of this introduction. The only downside for me is the narration, which I didn't enjoy. Fine for a story so short, but if it were longer I would really struggle.
