Following The Black Elfstone comes the second book in the triumphant four-part conclusion to the Shannara series, from one of the all-time masters of fantasy. Tensions in the Four Lands are high. The mysterious force that laid waste to Paranor has revealed a more human face. While some gain a new understanding of the invaders and what they are after, others continue their existing quests even as the peril rises. For what looked to be a formidable invading force proves only the forerunner of a much vaster army - one that is now marching against the Four Lands in all its fury.

Story
Four years after the devastating invasion by agents of Lon-Ser, Tobyn-Ser's Order of Mages and Masters is riven by conflict and paralyzed by inaction. From the outlander, Baram, they have learned much about their neighbor to the west: unlike Tobyn-Ser, which is served by the Mage-Craft of the Children of Amarid, Lon-Ser is devoid of magic; instead, it possesses a dazzling and deadly technology that shapes every aspect of its people's daily life. Frustrated by the Order's inability to act, Orris, a young, rebellious mage, takes it upon himself to prevent further attacks on his homeland.

Forget George and the dragon. Forget Sir Lancelot and tales of knightly exploits. This is dirty, bloody work. This is violent, visceral action. This is a mercenary knight as you've never seen one before. Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders.

Editor reviews
"I can't even begin to count how many of Terry Brooks's books I've read (and re-read) over the years." (Patrick Rothfuss)

"A master of the craft...required reading." (Brent Weeks)
Summary
The Black Elfstone is the first book in the Fall of Shannara, the epic four-part conclusion to the wildly popular Shannara series by Terry Brooks - one of the all-time masters of fantasy.
The Four Lands has been at peace for generations, but now a mysterious army of invaders is cutting a bloody swath across a remote region of the land. No one knows who they are, where they come from, or what they are after - and most seem content to ignore these disturbing events.
The only people who sense a greater growing threat and wish to uncover the truth are society's outcasts: an exiled High Druid, a conflicted warrior, a teenage girl struggling to master a prodigious magic...and a scrappy young orphan, improbably named Shea Ohmsford.

Too Short
Politics, corruption, magic, always make for a good listen. Having come late to the plate and not listening to the previous books, I have no preconceptions.
There are several strong characters; Driskar Arc, retired Ard Rhys; Tarsha, his student; Darcon Leah, the Blade. And then we have Ajin d’Amphere, Commander of the Skaar army who thinks nothing of double dealing and killing.
This book kept up a steady pace and I look forward to Book 2.

Fabulous in every way
Fabulous in every way, this is Terry Brooks at his finest, and with some of the best voice acting I've ever heard, this is a book that's not to be missed.
It's been a few years since I read any books in the Shannara series, but this has to be one of my favourites. With some darker themes than in previous novels, The Fall of Shannara series has evolved the brand, just as the magical realm itself has evolved throughout Brooks' storytelling.

Not the usual Terry Brookes Shannara story.
A bit of a slow start at first but once it got going it became more exciting and dramatic slightly different to the usual Terry Brookes Shannara story line
I look forward to seeing how it all develops.

Awesome, exciting, a real page turner!!
Terry is the most outstanding and prolific fantasy writer. I love his books, re-read my favourites and share my love with my daughter. The Black Elfstone is another fabulous book, connected to all previous Shannera books, but a stand alone novel too. Great storylines and believable characters, you get drawn into the book from the first page and then cannot put it down. I love it and now that I’ve got the 2nd book in this series, I’ve just listened to the last 3 chapters of The Black Elfstone ready for the continued adventure. Keep writing Terry, we love you xx
